Bad leadership

Pros

Amazing and friendly colleagues. Remote work

Cons

The leadership of engineering is bad. They miss a lot of outside experience. Product and engineer has silos, and a lot of team don't talk to each other as often as it should. Leaders don't cares about the business, only their teams matters. The company also lack of goals management, it's quite unclear and unstable. They don't understand what is to be a startup and they're trying to be a big player in the market which is not true. And this is reflected in the product, where there is no innovation, only following competitors.

Pros

The pay a decent salary. Not great, but good enough.

Cons

Leadership doesn't seem to have a clue, and just throw spaghetti to the wall in hopes that any of them sticks. Many rounds of layoffs in the last 5 years. In this time they've fired 75% of the employees, many of them being in the company just weeks. Would't recommend to leave your existing job to join us, it's too high of a risk. Not only that, our company was just bought by Lyft, so it is quite likely that further layoffs might follow. There's virtually no chance of career progression. I've known very talented junior devs that didn't get any promotion before they left after 4 years. Same happens to middle and senior positions. Whatever position you get when hired, it't gonna be your position forever. Highest positions are virtually never filled via promotion, they hire them as such: staff engineers, senior EM/PM and all the way up. This is an inclusive company except that this inclusion exists only if you think exactly as you're told. Last year a colleague spoke out during an all-hands about the problem with their policies and this man was fired just some months later, as every man in the company knew would happen. Tech leadership is absent, which means that teams work mostly like isolated cells. Sometimes leadership will deem a migration critical, although once announced they'll rarely follow it up. Given that they usually don't set any deadlines, that means that the migration won't ever be completed, not even after 4 years. Product is worse than tech, though. They hire unexperienced people as product managers and give them no training. The consecuence is that most of the times you're gonna be working with vague requirements and you'll have to do most of their work. New hires are hybrid only, and they also forced remote employees back to the office last month. The Barcelona office is subpar, which makes the experience worse. Finally, the company doesn't provide resources to improve your knowledge: there's no budget to attend conventions, and the only resource provided is LinkedIn Learning that contains just the usual courses with buzzwords oriented to managers that need to fill their CV.

Pros

Generally, FREENOW has a friendly and pleasant atmosphere. The working environment is nice, and the people are generally kind and easy to get along with.

Cons

The management lacks ambition, which is a significant downside. Many in leadership roles have been with the company for a long time and seem to have run out of fresh ideas. This has led to a lack of proper care and development opportunities for the employees. The pay at FREENOW is not great. This can be demotivating, especially considering the lack of growth opportunities. Management doesn’t take responsibility for the company not being profitable. Instead of addressing the core issues, there's a lot of reorganization, which often feels threatening to employees as they are pushed to accept changes. There's a lack of transparency about the business operations. This makes it hard for employees to feel inspired or understand how they could contribute to improving the company. A disappointing aspect is when management doesn't take responsibility for their actions, especially when it leads to employees being let go due to the company's lack of success.

Opportunity to Learn but chaotic and unstable

Pros

Small enough to make impact and influence if you know how to navigate the org. Opportunity to learn and grow is high. In general nice people.

Cons

Ever changing strategy, teams and org structure. Lack of leadership and stability. Power politics often at play. Historic cultural issues often mean misalignment and difficultly getting buy in due to focus on personal agendas. Overly focused on just getting things done vs doing things well which leads to inefficiency in the long term. Only join if up for extremely fast pace, chaotic scale up environment.
