1) promotion based on who you know (and who likes you) 2) similarly, roles on projects doled out to favorites, not necessarily ability 3) laddering process has little to no relationship to performance 4) misplaced incentives (reward those who can do spreadsheets and presentations well, not those who do the actual work)
