I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Variety of projects to work on. Career progression is decent for a large organisation. Flexible benefits are decent.

    Cons

Work/life balance isn't as good as the company claims, not since the takeover by SNC-Lavalin. This is a particular problem because Atkins selling point vis-a-vis their competitors has always been that that the work/life balance is superior, with the trade-off being a lower salary than the likes of other engineering consultancies. However since the takeover work/life balance has got progressively worse, and in... addition SNC are looking to make further cost cutbacks. I would add there have been a raft of changes at Senior Management and Director levels the past year, and as such I increasingly feel the senior management are disconnected from the employees on the ground.

    Advice to Management

Reign in the poor reporting culture and encourage employees to report the actual hours they work rather than the silly rules of never reporting more than 37.5.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Decent flow of project work inward. Good working provisions.

    Cons

Workplace is stressful and outspoken from upper management downwards. Unprofessional commentaries in open plan office. Incoming staff are made clear they are expendable.

    Advice to Management

Learn from other companies of comparable size in terms of how to treat human talent.

I have been working at Atkins full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Good people working there and a pleasant and a relaxed working environment, good leave entitlements and training and development improving.

    Cons

Although improving, pay still not great, parking very poor at main office and public transport very poor. Can be difficult to get a promotion.

    Advice to Management

Look to develop your existing staff so they can earn promotions and better wages.

  9. "Hierarchical and unexciting"

    StarStarStarStarStar

    I worked at Atkins

    Pros

    Good people and reasonable pay

    Cons

Extremely hierarchical and unless you're an engineer there are limited opportunities for promotion to management level within the company. Old fashioned approach to management.

    Advice to Management

It's a multi-disciplinary consultancy now so management should be more representative of this. Stop focusing on just engineering staff.

    I worked at Atkins

    Pros

Excellent Team, Good Promotion Opportunities, Management is very experienced and has a lot to offer the team. Compensation for further education. Very good lunch hour presentations that count for CPD credit about once a month.

    Cons

Relatively low compensation, None of the UK benefits apply to this branch. The general office procedures are left for you to figure out as there is no formal induction.

    Advice to Management

Give more feedback on performance. Hold on to the talented individuals that you employ. Continue to schedule the lunchtime seminars.
