      Software Engineering Interview

      13 Nov 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Cambridge, MA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at HubSpot (Cambridge, MA) in Oct 2016

      Interview

The interview process at HubSpot was one of the most enjoyable interview experiences I have ever gone through. The recruiters I worked with were all quick to respond to any questions, transparent, and advocating for my success throughout. I started off with a phone interview after applying via college career fair (with an employee referral as well), then was given an unorthodox coding challenge which I thought was much more interesting than what I've seen other companies give. Finally, I was brought on site for a ~4 hour interview. Typical on-site interview logistics with software engineers, HR, and manager rotation. Each individual interview was conversational and laid-back; the interviewers were more focused on listening to my thought process and working with me to discover how I work rather than stare into the back of my head silently while I write on a whiteboard. I do much better in a collaborative environment like this, and as a result believe I was able to show a lot more of my skill than I would have in a pressured interview.

Our team spent a lot of time building a coding test that truly reflects how we approach technical challenges here at HubSpot, so I'm glad you found it so interesting and unique. Great to hear that you had such a positive experience and that you'll be joining us! -Becky

      Answer question

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at HubSpot (Boston, MA) in Sept 2020

      Interview

Applied in mid September and received a response about 1-2 weeks later. 1. You're first given an online assessment. Their online assessment consisted of sending a GET request to one endpoint to receive a bunch of data; then you process the data and sort through it (specified in the problem) and POST it back to another endpoint. You're given 3 hours to complete the online assessment, where they grade the assessment based on completion, time, and code readability. 2. Two days after taking the online assessment, I was invited for a 20 minute HR screening that asked fairly typical interview questions (see below). I was rejected here for whatever reason; I felt that my answers were good, but it seems that this year was extra competitive (most likely due to 2020's covid situation). 3. After the HR screening, I believe you have 2 one hour back to back technical interviews. According to the recruiter, these rounds were to be held in late October. I did not make it to these rounds.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      1. Describe a time you gave criticism to somebody. 2. Describe a time you had to explain something technical to some person. 3. What's the best part about working in a team, and what's the worst part about working in a team?
