HubSpot – Why Work For Us?

About Us

HubSpot is an all-in-one software platform that aims to take a more human approach to marketing and sales. As the world’s leading inbound marketing company, HubSpot’s award-winning software, services, and support help transform over 16,000 businesses in over 90 countries.

HubSpot chose Dublin as it Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) headquarters three years ago, and we’ve been growing at a rapid pace ever since. HubSpot Dublin runs all of the business growth and development for HubSpot in the region. Our employees are a mix of Irish natives and Dublin transplants who've come from over fifteen different countries across the European continent. Many speak multiple languages, but all bring their unique cultural perspectives to the table when serving the diverse array of HubSpot customers. HubSpot Dublin is one of our fastest growing offices, so we are currently hiring for and expanding roles in every team and department.

Our Culture and Philosophy

As a company, HubSpot was started to rethink how companies market and sell to match how consumers actually shop and buy. As a workplace, HubSpot set out from the start to create a workplace that matches how people actually want to live and work. We hire remarkable people and give them the autonomy to be awesome. We believe in radical transparency, so we share as much information as possible with every employee at every level. We care so much about culture that one of our co-founders codified our approach and it went viral. Learn more and read it all at  culturecode.com.

undefined

Our culture is built to give remarkable people the autonomy they need to do amazing work and transparency to grow and learn every day. Flexible hours, unlimited vacation time, and tuition reimbursement that kick in on day one create an environment that balances freedom with accountability to an unprecedented degree.

While the atmosphere here is seriously productive, don’t be fooled: we don’t take ourselves too seriously. From company wide Tag Rugby leagues to employee scavenger hunts, every day is unique. And with walls of snacks, free flowing coffee, and beer on tap, we’ve got way more than the basics covered. At the end of the day, however, it’s really our people that set us apart. As one employee wrote, “I love working at HubSpot because I'm inspired to work as hard and smart as my peers. The people I work with aren't coworkers, they're friends." Our Dublin team’s approach to culture is even more unique, as the Dublin office convenes a Culture Committee every two weeks with representatives from every department to talk about new initiatives and improvements and how we can infuse culture programming with the local flavor of our city.

At HubSpot, interns aren’t interns in the traditional sense of the word. No coffee runs here. Interns make real decisions, produce real work, and drive real results.

  • This program is built to help our interns learn key design, coding, and business skills, and also take advantage of the the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of a rapidly growing software company, while having some fun along the way, of course!

  • In fact, we invest so much in our interns that a large percentage of them go on to accept full time positions with HubSpot. Many of our team leaders today started as interns and continue year after year to develop their careers with us.

I have been working at HubSpot full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Smart, authentic and transparent leadership
    - A strong product that is always evolving - the marketing product really slowed down for a few years but the current work to take customer feedback seriously and future-proof is impressive
    - We get to solve for the mid market and SMBs. This is so much more interesting than chasing enterprises or being beholden to large customers. We can make a real impact on our customers businesses
    - Employee onboarding and training is taken very seriously - you are given what you need to succeed
    - We have real functions outside of the US (product, BI, legal, operations) - this is rare!
    - If you have a case to make and have the data and logic to back it up you can get access to whoever you need to make a change. People are accessible.

    Cons

    - If you don't want to give and receive feedback (good and bad) constantly then it's not the place for you - you can't be sensitive or take things personally - not really a con for me but be aware.
    - Need to do a better job at setting expectations around career growth and putting people in the drivers seat. We can pander a little bit to much to every piece of feedback
    - It's become increasingly difficult to execute a new idea quickly - BET, systems and reporting are slow and very centralized. I understand they have so many competing project and priorities and I'm confident we will get to a better place but this makes true autonomy difficult

    Advice to Management

    - Reduce your buzzwords. It's reached a peak!
    - Keep focused on balancing the short term execution and long term future-proofing

    Difficult Interview

    Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at HubSpot (Dublin, Co. Dublin) in June 2017.

    Interview

The process started with a call from one the internal recruiters, we had a quick chat about the role and Hubspot in general.

I was sent on a tech assessment which needed to be completed in 3 hours. It was great, you can use any language or tools you wish to get it completed. I managed to get it done in about 2 hours 20 mins.

I was then asked to come in for a face to face in their head office, this process took about 3 hours broken up into roughly 45 mins or more with 4 different groups of people.

The first part was a tech question/assignment. You needed to write a simple JavaScript function, I won't give away the details but it was a good test. You can use a whiteboard or your laptop with google to help you along the way if needed. It was pretty straight forward but I think being in a room with people can put you off with pressure, they tried to help and guide me through the solution. I didn't finish it but I nearly had it done and I felt the guys knew where I was going with it as I was talking through my thinking through out the process.

The second part was another tech test, some low level JavaScript functions to test your knowledge. This wasn't too difficult, I did manage to complete all parts of this and had a nice chat with the guy.

Third part was another technical test, you were given a partially working application written in JavaScript(ES6), basic HTML and CSS. You needed to expand on and fix some broken functionality. Then you needed to style it to how it looked in the example image. There was some basic ES6 usage they want to see. I managed to get it working perfectly, the guy even said I did a good job.

After that I met the head of engineering for a normal chat about my reasons for wanting to working at Hubspot, my short and long term career aspirations. Was a really nice chat and I got more of an insight of how Hubspot works day to day.

I left feeling confident that I did my best, the next day I was told that they didn't want to progress with my application. The only reason being that I wasn't what they were looking for on the technical side for a senior role.

All and all it was a great experience, I felt I bit hard done by though as it is very hard to gauge what they are looking for in terms of technical ability since I completed everything they asked.

    Maybe next time :)
