Pros

Benefits are okay Coworkers are nice in general

Cons

Salary is not competitive They hire people without having a clear idea for their role, then fire them and hire a new role again. Too many consultants and many people working in the same stuff. Areas feel disconnected among them

Pros

Many great people work here and the many products deliver real value.

Cons

GreenShield's motto is "Better Health for All" but I don't feel it extends to employees. First, there's an odd imbalance of below-average PTO and significantly above average mental health spending account dollars, as if an expensive weekly therapist is desired over more vacation. The mental health spending account increase was communicated along with a pitch on the wide range of mental health products our platform has, which felt extremely disingenuous. Second, the return to office policy and remote work changes were loosely communicated which left managers stuck in the middle and employees confused, and now enforcement is heading toward strict monitoring. Third, lately many top-class and well-liked employees including managers have either quit or been abruptly fired for speaking up. The lack of context communicated to employees is worrisome. These developments have created a culture of fear for myself and those I work closely with. HR feels like a spotlight to stay out of instead of a place to seek support from. While you can't knock an old-school company for operating as such, it's painful when the outward messaging is the opposite: "best company culture" awards, always inviting feedback, etc. The outward messaging of "Better Health for All" contrasts with what feels like an Amazon-style approach of treating employees purely like numbers - not what you might imagine working at a non-profit supporting health and wellbeing to feel like.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. At GreenShield, Better Health for All starts with our people, and we want to clarify how that commitment shows up every day. On PTO vs. Mental Health: Our Total Rewards program was designed to reflect our values and areas in which we specialize, with mental health as a key pillar. This includes coverage for employees and their dependents with no co-pay, ensuring broad access to care. PTO is competitive within our sector, and we regularly review both benefits based on data and employee input. On Remote Work: Our hybrid work model currently provides flexibility for the majority of roles to work remotely up to three days per week. This flexibility is important to us, particularly as many organizations have now reduced remote work to one or two days weekly, and others have eliminated it entirely. We remain focused on clear communication as we evolve and adapt to changing needs. On Culture and Terminations: Decisions are made thoughtfully, and we encourage employees to speak up. Feedback and transparency remain core to how we operate, and our leadership team is accessible. GreenShield invests in its employees – including our Total Rewards program, flexibility, and well-being - because we believe in our people. If you have constructive ideas, please share them directly or reach out to talent@greenshield.ca. Your input helps us continue to make GreenShield an even better place to work.

Pros

The company has a strong culture and is on a strong path in terms of growth and sustainability. The company focuses on helping people instead of share value. There is still a push for performance but not at the expense of people.

Cons

Hybrid work environment of 2 days in-office per week is unpopular though it is better than many others in 2025.

Thank you for your 5-star review! We’re pleased to hear that our purpose-driven leadership and culture have stood out in your experience. Building trust, empowering our teams, and creating an environment where employees feel heard, supported, and encouraged to grow are priorities at GreenShield, and it’s rewarding to see that reflected in your day‑to‑day work. We hold our leaders accountable to a set of behaviours that guide us, aligned with our values and mission of Better Health for All. Thank you for your review. We’re pleased to hear that you found the compensation competitive and valued working alongside a talented and committed team. Our people and their dedication are central to delivering on our mission of Better Health for All. While we appreciate you sharing your perspective on the work of our GreenShield Cares team, we were disappointed to see it characterized as performative. It’s important to clarify that GreenShield is a non‑profit organization, not only in one line of business. All excess earnings are reinvested directly into our mission. Through partnerships with community organizations, we redeploy our service capabilities to support Canadians underserved by traditional health care and insurance plans, delivering culturally appropriate care grounded in lived experience and focused where need is greatest. To date, more than one million Canadians have been positively impacted, and this work is made possible by the dedication of GreenShielders across the organization. We take comments about leadership seriously. While we can’t address individual situations, we hold our leaders accountable to behaviours that reflect our values and purpose; and that includes giving every employee the opportunity to learn, grow, and do their best work. Our turnover rate remains in line with the national average and comparable Canadian organizations. We’re proud of our dynamic, high‑performance culture, while recognizing it may not be the right fit for everyone. We encourage you to connect with your People & Culture Business Partner so concerns can be addressed through the appropriate channels.
