      Solution Consultant (Dublin) Interview

      27 Jan 2013
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Dublin, Dublin
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Guidewire (Dublin, Dublin) in Dec 2012

      Interview

3 hour coding test with 1 compulsory question about bad code and to answer another question with the questions being about JDBC, Iterators or JMS. Walked that part of the interview. The next was a 40 minute phone interview where the guy asked me about the code test and standard Java and JDBC questions. Guy was very nice and gave me as much chance as possible to demonstrate my knowledge. Final part was a 3 hour face to face interview, made up of 2 parts, the 1st part with one guy, the second part was with two guys. Did not get one technical question wrong in the entire interview. The first guy asked me a brain teaser which he did not explain properly as he was in a hurry to go to a meeting. He only actually explained it when he was giving me the answer. Thought he had an attitude throughout the whole interview and I could never see myself working with someone like that. The 2nd two guys were better, although when I was given a coding question which had a number of different ways of doing it, one of the guys kept interrupting repeatedly me doing the question. He seemed to have in his head one particular way of doing it which actually wasn't the most efficient or best way to solve the problem. I couldn't work with someone who had their own view of how to solve a problem and would interject if someone else would do it their own way. It goes against what their company says it stands for since they are promoting themselves as very much a team based company where everyone is equal. The interview process proved that it wasn't the case so be careful not to fall for this at the interview. I left the interview with no intention of working there but I gave the company the courtesy of letting me know how I got on and I didn't get it on the basis of the brain teaser and the fact that I was answered the coding question differently to what the guy who kept interrupting wanted. I was probably unlucky with the people who interviewed me but it is very difficult for a company that is promoting the kind of culture that they are advocating to keep up a facade when the truth is probably different.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

You have three pots, one has red marbles, one has green marbles and the other has a mixture of red and green marbles. Each pot has a label indicating what colour marbles the pot should contain. The labels are on the wrong pots. You can not see what is in each pot. By only putting your hand into one of the pots and taking out a marble, determine the least number of marbles you need to take out of any of the pots to determine which label should be on which pot. (This was the brain teaser not explained properly)
