      User Experience Designer Interview

      12 Nov 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Deloitte (London, England) in Oct 2022

      Interview

The process was lengthy with endless waiting for one of the leads to schedule the next round - though I must say some recruiters responded to my e-mails in a timely manner and were happy to give more details when needed. Thank you. I passed four stages: a screening call, an initial interview of 60 minutes, a design challenge which I then discussed during a 60-minute call and finally, a Director's round of 45 minutes. The last stage was atrocious. The Director talked *at* me for 15 minutes about the job bringing no new details to what was already discussed during rounds one and two and before that during the initial screening call. When the time came to ask me questions, she apologised and said that she might be looking away to take notes. As I started giving my responses, the noise of incoming messages on her computer told me everything I needed to know - a) she has little to no interest in what I had to say b) she doesn't care about interrupting me c) even if given the offer, I wouldn't think of working with her. At the end of the interview, I was given the chance to ask questions. 3 out of 4 of her responses consisted of "It depends" which only reconfirmed my conclusions. You can imagine that at the end of this call, my expectations drastically plummeted. It did seem that the Director's round was more of a game of appearances than a serious examination of my skills. It was clear from the get-go that the Director arbitrarily decided that I would not be a good fit and the last round was a mere formality. I would suggest both the Director and a couple of teammates participated in the final round. Otherwise, you will end up hustling your way through the consecutive rounds of the interviews, spending time completing the design challenge, only to be faced with a Cesarean verdict that has nothing to do with who you are as a designer. PS I began the process in late August and concluded it with the Director's call in late October. I asked them to at least provide me with some feedback on my performance or the rationale behind their decision not to place me with an offer - three weeks later, still no response.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Deloitte (Toronto, ON)

      Interview

      1. Initial call with HR— basic questions about interest in Deloitte, salary expectations, eligibility to work in Canada, etc. 2. Portfolio review interview with manager and senior manager- 30 min technical/behavioural questions, 30 min walk through 1 case study with questions about process, personas, research methods, design decisions, etc. Fairly straightforward and casual. 3. 1 hr Behavioural interview with C and SC level UX designers and SM. Second half of call was for me to ask questions. Very casual and friendly conversation. 4. 1 hr chat with creative director and manager. Friendly chit chat with director and then presented another case study. Very conversational flow. Follow up with HR about a week later with the verbal offer, written offer a few days later. Offer was within range but not really open to negotiation. Overall the entire process wasn’t very difficult and took about 2 months from when I applied to when I got an offer. The process has since been more streamlined to less interviews, though approvals do take a while so expect to wait to receive an offer.
