Pros

-Remote work, which is not that big of a pro nowadays since everyone is working remotely

Cons

Where do I start? I am assuming that if you are reading through reviews of VanHack you are either a current employee, in the interview process, or considering applying. If you are in the process, let me implore you - do not accept a position at VanHack and save yourself and your mental health. - First of all, I'm 100% sure most of these reviews are fake. No one from my team is happy at VanHack, and they haven't been for a long time. Lots of my coworkers have been actively looking for new jobs - The CEO is the worst leader I've ever had, and many of my coworkers agree with me. He is a controlling micromanager with no soft skills. He doesn't know the words "Thank you" or "Please". He's compared salespeople to monkeys. He's made people cry. He'll freak out if you don't answer a client's email within minutes. He's that kind of a guy - The CEO's impulsivity and unwillingness to listen mean that you are constantly switching directions and accomplishing little. Since there is no corporate governance (board or actual shareholders), no one keeps him accountable. Managers are afraid of speaking up and end up going along with whatever craziness he comes up with that week. Ilya can swing from loving and firing an employee within just weeks - There are no A players at VanHack. Everyone seems to be just barely good at what they do. Many people are doing things they’re not really qualified for. In order to save money, they compromise on skills. Management is no different - most managers have no previous management experience and are basically learning on the go - You’ll be making a difference to candidates’ lives… But that doesn’t mean it will be good for them. VanHack doesn’t care if their clients (companies) have a bad reputation or not – they’re just after the money. There were reports of some of our candidates being abused by their employer, and VanHack not only did nothing to help them, but continued to send more candidates to said company. If you still believe that VanHack is about “helping people accomplish their dream of moving abroad”, think twice. Nowadays it’s all about numbers and revenue - Really bad pay. You think you'll make lots of money working for a Canadian company? No, you won't. They’ll lure you in with the remote work and the fact that you’ll be “making a difference”, hoping you wont notice the low pay and subpar work environment. They'll pay you the least amount of money they can. And don't think your salary situation is going to get better after a while. The absolute best you can hope for is a 5% annual raise. I mean, that's why most of the team is not Canadian and doesn't live in Canada... It's not about diversity, it's about spending less. Meanwhile, Ilya pockets millions every year - Really high turnover. This speaks for itself. The HR department ensures that the company meets its legal obligations to staff but seems uninterested in the health or wellbeing of employees. There is condescending tone to their one-on-one communications with employees. - If you speak up about issues, be ready to be either: A. Ignored. B. Have your work ethics slandered so they don’t have to deal with the real issue. C. Fired. - No room for growth. Sure, you'll accumulate more and more responsibilities every year. But being promoted? Receiving a significant raise? Forget about it. I don't know one single person in the whole team who has made a vertical move. And by the way: VanHack has a track record of firing people who ask for raises, so think twice before doing it (or better yet: find a better job) P.S - I can almost guarantee that after this review posts, Ilya will be asking people on the team meeting AGAIN for a positive Glassdoor review, or writing some fake ones himself.

Hi there, this is Ilya, CEO at VanHack. I wanted to personally reply to this message since a lot of it was directed towards myself and ultimately I am responsible for the employee experience at VanHack. I am very confident that I know who wrote this review. It’s a person who left VanHack and tried to start a competitor, which didn’t work out. I believe they’re writing this post to try to hurt the company. There are many things to say in response to this post, so let’s go through them point by point: The reviews are not fake. Yes, I did ask our team to leave honest reviews on Glassdoor as a birthday present for me in 2018. Other than that, we haven’t actively asked for people to leave reviews. If I’m the worst CEO people have worked with, why have many of our team members stayed at VanHack for 4-5 years, basically since the start of the company? Ask anyone who is on our team right now what they think of me as a leader. We do move fast at VanHack so many new things come up. This is how startups work. People who do not like change and must always follow the process 100% should not work here. As for “loving to firing in weeks” again this isn’t true, we always put people on Improvement plans and give them time to change. Not having A players on the team is just insulting to many of the great people who put their hard work into making VanHack the success that it is. Yes it’s true we don’t offer silicon valley salaries so we don’t have people here who went to Ivy League schools and worked at Google, but we do have many great people who have grown and improved a ton over the years. I’m very proud of our team. (Also, I don’t think saying other people aren’t A players is a very A player thing to do…) As for “just being in it for the money and not caring about our candidates” again this is 100% false. If I wanted to create a company that was just about making money I would have gone into Cryptocurrency or something like that. I believe he is talking about a case where one of our candidates at a Montreal company complained about her employer. We did speak with the employer to understand what happened and as always there were 2 sides to the story. We spoke to other candidates at that company who said good things about the company, so we kept working with them. There is another case of another company in Montreal that we did stop working with since we believed it wasn’t a great place to work. Same with a startup from Toronto. It is something we are very aware of and right now frankly we have more customers than we can keep up with so we are being more picky with the ones we work with. Really bad pay. Yes, we do pay lower than Canadian rate for some of our roles. However, that's because these roles are located in other countries where our salaries are actually very high. In other roles, such as Sales where we have people in Canada and Europe, we have had people make over $20,000 a month with base and commission. I’d say this is a great salary. Again, we’re a startup and performance gets rewarded. High turnover. Yes, we did lay people off during COVID in April 2020 as our business was in danger of running out of money, but very few people actually quit voluntarily. Feedback not being heard. Sure, I can do a better job of listening and taking feedback, especially negative. This is definitely one of my weaknesses. However we now have a really great leadership team and HR in place who compliment my weaknesses and work closely with their teams to improve our processes and listen to the team. I can point to many things that we’ve improved over the last year such as changing our All Hands meeting format, changing the sales team’s commission structure, introducing Unlimited Personal time off, introducing a $500 a year Learning and Development budget and implementing a mentorship program for the women on our team. No room for growth. We have promoted and sponsored the visa and relocation of 5 of our team members, so this is clearly false. For example, we just promoted one of our top recruiters to be the new Head of Talent on our team. We also promoted another recruiter to be the head of a new Screening team we’re building and we promoted one of our developers to be the head of the Frontend team. But the fact is that we’re a startup with just 40 people with not as many leadership roles as a large company would. This is something we hope to change as a company and one of the benefits of working at a startup is that even if you’re not a “manager” you’ll have a ton of responsibilities and challenges to take on. To finish, I was really hurt when I read this post as the person clearly was very upset with me and his experience at VanHack. This obviously isn’t something that we want to happen. However I am really confident in our team, our company and most importantly the incredible VanHack community. If you would like to discuss any of the points above feel free to email me at ilya@vanhack.com, tweet me @ilyabrotzky or add me on LinkedIn. Thanks for reading and I hope you consider VanHack as a place to grow your career and make a huge difference in the lives of tech professionals globally.

Biased candidate onboarding process

Pros

Good collogues and work flexibility. Pay is okayish ... not that great.

Cons

I have not seen this much biased hiring process anywhere else. There are ton of good candidates from their portal that deserve a representation but instead they chose nepotism. Just because someone is from country X doesn't mean we should have a negative attitude towards them.

Thanks for your feedback. I will assume that your feedback is regarding our global recruitment servicers and not our internal team in the company. At VanHack team, we have a diverse talent from 14 different nationalities, 17 countries represented, 50% of Women in the leadership team, and company-wide. We can still do better regarding Diversity and Inclusion, but I believe we have done a good job. On the Global Recruitment Servicers provided to our Hiring Partners and Tech talent, we have an Applicant Track System that uses AI-matching rates to select the candidates with the closest skills that our clients are looking for, so candidates are first selected based on their skills described on their profiles. However, it is important to keep in mind that we are global, and candidates also need to attend to Immigration requirements such as education, years of experience, and location to allow them to relocate. We have helped candidates from over 30 countries get hired. HR Team.

Pros

We have a direct positive impact on candidate's lives, providing feedbacks, helping them improve their performance and, finally, helping them realize their dreams moving to a different country: this is a really meaningful part of what we do. It's always satisfying whenever a candidate has been committed, working hard and gets hired We get to work and interact with people from all over the world everyday, it's a 100% remote company, so we have plenty of flexibility As a recruiter, you don't have to source for candidates in several platforms: we have our own platform, work with our candidate base and there's a sourcing team focused on bringing new candidates to the platform as needed The company is still small, so your voice and ideas are heard, including when it comes to ideas to improve the platform

Cons

Recruiters have a base salary + comission per hiring. The base salary is not great and the comission is highly affected by the type of client you're hiring candidates for (some clients are committed and invested and you can close a position pretty fast, but others are not that invested and might drag the process a lot, so there's just so much hard work you can do: it's almost like a lottery anytime a new client appears) Not having to source candidates from other platforms is great, but it means that the database of candidates might be limited, so sometimes you have a really strong finalist candidate that gets hired by another company, through another recruiter - which, of course, is great for the candidate, but not so much if you're after your comission or want to achieve your monthly hiring goal Sometimes, some people from the sales team focus too much on getting new client companies abroad and might leave some important steps of the selection process behind. Also, some of those clients might not be too committed on hiring someone from abroad and we have to put a lot of hard work on engaging the clients Our online platform might get buggy or really slow at times which can be annoying given it's our main working tool, however we have a tech team that works hard and is always available to solve these issues
