Where do I start? I am assuming that if you are reading through reviews of VanHack you are either a current employee, in the interview process, or considering applying. If you are in the process, let me implore you - do not accept a position at VanHack and save yourself and your mental health.
- First of all, I'm 100% sure most of these reviews are fake. No one from my team is happy at VanHack, and they haven't been for a long time. Lots of my coworkers have been actively looking for new jobs
- The CEO is the worst leader I've ever had, and many of my coworkers agree with me. He is a controlling micromanager with no soft skills. He doesn't know the words "Thank you" or "Please". He's compared salespeople to monkeys. He's made people cry. He'll freak out if you don't answer a client's email within minutes. He's that kind of a guy
- The CEO's impulsivity and unwillingness to listen mean that you are constantly switching directions and accomplishing little. Since there is no corporate governance (board or actual shareholders), no one keeps him accountable. Managers are afraid of speaking up and end up going along with whatever craziness he comes up with that week. Ilya can swing from loving and firing an employee within just weeks
- There are no A players at VanHack. Everyone seems to be just barely good at what they do. Many people are doing things they’re not really qualified for. In order to save money, they compromise on skills. Management is no different - most managers have no previous management experience and are basically learning on the go
- You’ll be making a difference to candidates’ lives… But that doesn’t mean it will be good for them. VanHack doesn’t care if their clients (companies) have a bad reputation or not – they’re just after the money. There were reports of some of our candidates being abused by their employer, and VanHack not only did nothing to help them, but continued to send more candidates to said company. If you still believe that VanHack is about “helping people accomplish their dream of moving abroad”, think twice. Nowadays it’s all about numbers and revenue
- Really bad pay. You think you'll make lots of money working for a Canadian company? No, you won't. They’ll lure you in with the remote work and the fact that you’ll be “making a difference”, hoping you wont notice the low pay and subpar work environment. They'll pay you the least amount of money they can. And don't think your salary situation is going to get better after a while. The absolute best you can hope for is a 5% annual raise. I mean, that's why most of the team is not Canadian and doesn't live in Canada... It's not about diversity, it's about spending less. Meanwhile, Ilya pockets millions every year
- Really high turnover. This speaks for itself. The HR department ensures that the company meets its legal obligations to staff but seems uninterested in the health or wellbeing of employees. There is condescending tone to their one-on-one communications with employees.
- If you speak up about issues, be ready to be either: A. Ignored. B. Have your work ethics slandered so they don’t have to deal with the real issue. C. Fired.
- No room for growth. Sure, you'll accumulate more and more responsibilities every year. But being promoted? Receiving a significant raise? Forget about it. I don't know one single person in the whole team who has made a vertical move. And by the way: VanHack has a track record of firing people who ask for raises, so think twice before doing it (or better yet: find a better job)
P.S - I can almost guarantee that after this review posts, Ilya will be asking people on the team meeting AGAIN for a positive Glassdoor review, or writing some fake ones himself.
