Pros

Good work-life balance if you're looking for a place to coast.

Cons

The company prides themselves on being family-first which was a huge draw for me. While I did see some evidence of this for long-tenured employees, my experience was the exact opposite. There is no bereavement policy, and they actually removed the 5 days of sick time that new employees were promised at time of hire because it was being "abused". Take note that all of the positive company reviews are from long-tenured (5+ years) employees. The CEO has a lot of bizarre unwritten cultural rules and keeps a close watch to make sure they are being followed. The CTO is there to coast into retirement, so rather than backing up his employees, he bends to and enforces all of the CEO's needs ("paying the CEO tax" in his words) as to not make any waves. This creates a very weird, cult-like fear-based engineering culture where everyone pretends to worship the CEO and no one feels comfortable to openly speak their minds. There are plenty of red flags during the hiring process, even in the offer letter. Pay attention to them.

Pros

- Kind, hard-working, and smart coworkers who really care about their work - Offsite retreats are fun - Compensation and benefits are pretty good - The work itself is fun and fulfilling

Cons

- The C-Suite is overworked, understaffed, and hesitant to distribute their workload - The CEO is...a lot. He's not the nicest guy, and I saw him be quite rude on many occasions. I got bad vibes in my interview and wish I'd listened to them. - Since it's a holiday-based company, you'll be working on almost all major holidays. - Goals are all over the place, and it feels like no matter how hard you work, your work is never good enough

"I want this to be the best job you ever have."

Pros

When I first started working at Punchbowl, Matt, our CEO, told me, "I want this to be the best job you ever have." It's something I've heard him repeat many times, because he really means it. There are many things that make Punchbowl a fantastic place to work (important things like genuine support of and trust in employees; fun things like summer BBQs in Punchbowl Park; etc) but what really makes this place is the team of people behind it. I am privileged to go to work every day with intelligent, kind, thoughtful individuals. They make me laugh, jump in to help me when I need it, and challenge me in the best possible way.

Cons

We hold ourselves to a standard of excellence, so there are times of year (preparing for the holiday season, for example) when working at Punchbowl is demanding. But there is an enormous sense of satisfaction (and plenty of celebration) when we achieve our milestones, which always makes it worth going that extra mile.
