The Last 3 Reviews of Pythian are Fake

Pros

I wasn't going to review Pythian because I don't have many good things to say about working there, however it's usually best to keep those things private. But reading the last employee 'reviews' that are so blatantly fake, full of the typical Pythian rhetoric and written by HR or senior management really annoyed me. I encourage other Pythian employees to write their own real, unbiased reviews here whether they are positive or negative.

Cons

The biggest problem working here is that at the interview you are sold this vision of Pythian being a fun, open-minded, flexible place to work - but it is not. It feels closer to a dictatorship depending on who you report to.

Pros

Some of the staff are really great. They know what they're doing, are helpful to others, and respectful when asking for help. There are some exciting projects to work on. But, you'll have to work hard to get assigned to those projects.

Cons

Some of the staff are simply incompetent. They survive by leeching off their peers, and management is too detached to notice or deal with this effectively. Management consistently picks the wrong solution, sometimes even for problems that don't exist. Similarly, management seems to have no coherent strategy for which features to pursue -- instead we pursue all of them, poorly. This damages the reputation of the team, which is incredibly demotivating. Projects are regularly dropped at the 80% mark because a new priority has risen to the top -- typically, a political priority. Management seems to be most concerned with ingratiating themselves with their peers than the performance of the team, or delivering the best solutions possible.

Pros

great DBAs (maybe not the top 5%, but everyone's solid), good salary, solid commitment to learning and continuous training. very good business model (remote database admin by a top caliber team)

Cons

very hierarchical structure, with little possibility for advancement into management unless you are in "the club". marketing team and HR push a vision of pythian that is almost cult-like and comes off as very naive and fake. senior management team is incredibly closed off and clearly not comfortable interacting with regular workers. the environment will be familiar to anyone who's done military service.
