Pros

We still have remote work after the acquisition. For now.

Cons

Where do I start. Leadership, specifically Chris & Gina but also Aaron, flat out lied to our faces for over 6 months. Culture has gone to the gutters. Opportunities for growth are a thing of the past. Multiple rounds of layoffs with more on the horizon. Promotions, raises, and bonuses don't exist anymore, we haven't hired in months and we're hemorrhaging people. We are not people, we are cash cows to be squeezed for every last billable hour available. Bench policy means that even though we have no say in what project we're on and we're working full time and performing well, we can still be fired. "Leadership" is inept and are all chasing their new titles with no one communicating to the employees what's happening. We get whiplash from them saying everything is great one day and that a decision is final and the next week acting like they never heard of that decision before. We have absolutely no idea what our benefits are going to be, and we're supposed to be on NTT benefits in a few weeks. I have a medical condition that I need to book doctors for months in advance and they could truly care less. It is an open secret we're all looking for work and are just biding the time until we get our next jobs.

Losing steam

Pros

The work is really interesting and there’s a fairly good work-life balance. The people are really great and everyone is genuinely an expert in what they do.

Cons

Postlight markets itself as an open, inclusive shop that cares about its employees, but behind the scenes it’s a mess. Zero pay transparency and no salary bands; no one knows how much anyone makes and raises are given out secretly and totally randomly. Senior management only gives out raises and promotions when they think people are going to leave, what a joke. They’re also the earliest to leave the office and some of them take random vacations on short notice when there are clear rules about vacation policies. They spend the least time working and yet they still expect everyone to keep cranking out high quality work. No wonder morale is low.

Interesting Work, Talented People

Pros

The people at Postlight are my favorite part about the job. Everyone cares about the work and works hard. People across departments are interesting, smart, incredibly talented, and eager to help. I've made great working relationships and friendships here. The culture is on the side of introverted, which works for me. The real workplace bonding happens on Slack, which is often funny, informal, and full of team inside jokes. But we do also have kitchen beers and happy hours, karaoke, various clubs, and digital team hangouts. During COVID times, the leadership feels like a stable force amidst all of this, and they've introduced great perks to keep us feeling appreciated. I trust their direction with this company. I'm paid fairly, the benefits are above par, and my direct manager is a delightful, smart, and caring person.

Cons

Sometimes working with the managing partners can feel intimidating. They're an extremely smart and close-knit bunch, and stepping into that dynamic without much direction can feel overwhelming. I don't always feel 100% welcome or heard in meetings where I'm involved with leadership. It's easy to feel like the odd one out or like my ideas are less valued off the bat. Oftentimes leadership is quicker to point out shortcomings or areas of improvement in the work or the approach, rather than validation and praise of what is working. As a result I often feel unsure of the performance of my work in this role at different occasions. While this does lead to high-quality work, it can hurt morale, and would be better with a balance. Make sure employees know their work is valued. Also, leadership should do what they can to support the voices of others rather than stifle them, and give credit in all the various places credit is due.
