Pros

Genuinely rewarding work. You get an opportunity to have a positive impact on kids and learn and experience new cultures.

Cons

Extremely disorganized and understaffed. There was generally a complete lack of a plan or guidelines the onus was on the staff to essentially create an activities program out of thin air. Most often without adequate supplies. The company showed little regard for staff welfare or mental health. Placing young workers under extreme pressure while working long hours often over those contracted. Some staff were brought to tears on multiple occasions due to the pressure they were under. Many staff were also layed off on mass as soon as there was no need for them very few seasonal staff were kept on for the duration of their contract with some who were hired late being let go with no notice. Instances of misbehaviour and abuse of staff were also badly handled. There is virtually no disciplinary structure for the children. It is entirety dependent on group leaders managing there own kids which unfortunately is not always the case.

Smoke and Mirrors

Pros

The only real pros came from the travel opportunities and amazing people I met through this work.

Cons

There were unfortunately many, many cons. The work culture thrives on manipulation, highly volatile emotional leadership, insecurity, and need for control. Strategic planning hardly exists in a company that has such a wide, global impact on youth. Employees working with the children don't always have the proper background checks, yet this company gets away with these safe-guarding faults year after year putting young students in danger. Salaries are incredibly low, even for the UK and Europe, and promised promotional conversations are avoided with full-time business operational employees to keep these costs low and CEO salary at a maximum. Employee benefits are easily overgone to spend more money on smoke and mirror events for their hundreds of VIP clients. Corners are cut frequently and in abundance to uphold an image of perfection to clients. Their branding and marketing is well done, again upholding an image of success while the reality behind the scenes is constant chaos. Without a thoughtful organizational structure and HR team (yes, this company has NO Human Resources, so bias is plenty and employees remain unsupported in so many issues) this company survives only through the consistent fighting of fires rather than doing necessary strategic work and investing in people, innovation, and future-thinking to transform their services from empty offers and burnt out employees into a highly impactful business of growth. There is so much potential, yet the company culture is old, stubborn, and ingrained, lacking the environment to really support positive change.

Pros

Did not necessarily need very expensive certifications often asked elsewhere. Multicultural and diverse.

Cons

It is only a summer job.
