I worked at John Hancock full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

The corporate culture is very worker friendly because of the parent Canadian company, Manulife.

    Cons

They are offshoring IT jobs at an increasing rate.

I worked at John Hancock full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    - A lot of management support - Solid training program - Great people to work with - Lots of opportunities to get involved

    Cons

    - Don't get paid overtime unless it's specifically outlined in your contract. Management's answer to the large amount of overtime that some departments work is "that it's not encouraged".

    Advice to Management

    Pay your burnout workers overtime!

    Advice to Management

-Hire IT Leadership from the outside that has fresh ideas -Get rid of "job clingers" who are at the company forever and all they talk about is how to retire-what do they do to improve the company? -Stop doing awful song and dance, rap songs, videos, etc. and have an honest conversation with employees, stop spinning everything.

I worked at John Hancock full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Work from home Flexible hours Tuition reimbursement Growth & development Decent healthcare package Matching 401(k) Large company with many opportunities for training and transfer

    Cons

Flexible hours, yes, but you will work long hours, including nights and weekends: Be prepared to pick up the slack for unproductive colleagues, including your manager, because their weak work ethic and toxic behavior will not be addressed beyond an initial slap on the wrist. Some of the sales staff can be overly aggressive and inappropriate, with no respect for boundaries or your time. Favoritism is rampant: If you have a strong work ethic and are not liked for whatever reason, there is a chance you will be targeted, despite working harder than others. Example: They hired a manager to oversee the team; he never learned the products, never learned how to create a proposal on his own, openly spoke ill of subordinates to other subordinates, and couldn't even do the one job he was apparently hired to do, which was assigning work. He missed dates, blamed others for his mistakes, etc. Basically, he was unprofessional in every way. However, he was popular with certain people due to his ability to stand in the middle of a room and entertain, so his inexcusable behavior was tolerated by many. Salary is far below industry standard

    Advice to Management

Do a better job of vetting people and monitoring your employees' wellness. You have good people working there, but they're leaving in droves because of the uneven work distribution and shoddy hiring process. And you're wasting high-end salaries on quite a few undeserving people, specifically managers, who essentially do nothing. In fact, they're a hindrance to the progress of the company, and they reduce the quality and morale of their respective teams.

I have been working at John Hancock

    Pros

    Great company, compensation, benefits, culture

    Cons

Way too much micromanaging. Leadership is very vague with new direction. It’s overbearing and something I’m considering leaving for because as an employee I don’t feel valued at all.

    Advice to Management

Empower employees, don’t just say it, and less micromanaging will enable employees to work better and at ease. The restructuring is stressful enough.

I have been working at John Hancock full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Work From Home Flexible Hours Nice Location

    Cons

There is zero diversity all around. It is overly represented by very local fourth or fifth generation Massachusetts residents who have no exposure to the changes taking place outside the bubble they live in. This has resulted in a corporate culture that is very 1990's where productivity, automation, innovation, creativity and customer-centric approach is thwarted by people who think working 12 hours a day, doing the same thing again and again, makes them competent employees. Since the company is full of people from Massachusetts it also lacks gender and racial diversity. So the employees lack the ambition or drive to steer change. All in all, it has a feel of being stuck in a time warp. Work here if you are not driven or ambition and like a bloated bureaucratic structure.

    Advice to Management

Hire folks from outside Massachusetts. Hire younger people. Retain employees who are constant learners and problem-solvers. Hire a more diverse workforce. The future of the company depends on an agile, ambitious workforce who want to apply new ideas and thoughts. Let go of a workforce that acts like it is in the 1990s, is reluctant to change, wants to play it safe. Let go of employees who want to keep archaic process which takes them 2 hours to complete - if automated can be done in 10 minutes - so they can pat themselves on their back for working long hours.

I have been working at John Hancock full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I work out of the Tempe office and absolutely love the people I work with. Minimum expectations are easy to meet. However if you want to move up you have to be exceeding. Depending on your team you may start work early so you get out early.

    Cons

Difficult to bonus because you have to be in the top out of the entire Boston and Tempe office. A lot of politics but if you know how to play the game you are good.
