Pros

I worked at Sun Life for almost exactly 20 years. My experiences here varied, but for many years it was overall a stable place to work with decent benefits and wages. Since I worked here for so long I can't really compare it to similar companies in terms of compensation, but it helped me provide for my family. Your experience here will depend a great deal on what kind of team leader/manager you end up with. If they are willing to mentor you and stand up for you with upper management, you will have a more positive experience. This is a large organization and there are both good and nasty managers (some of whom seem to last a long time). I have also had the pleasure of working with some outstanding co-workers on some of the teams I was with. Depending on what you are looking for, there can be a lot of opportunity for growth.

Cons

In spite of what they tell you to the contrary, numbers are important, and how much you do is sometimes more important than how well you do. Obsession with numbers can be a source of tremendous stress, Over the years, there have been periods of cuts and layoffs, and I feel like this company is entering one of those in a big way right now. More and more jobs are being sent offshore, and it seems that very few jobs are secure anymore. Employees in the overseas subsidiaries can work for much less than we in Canada can, and there seems to be a willingness on the part of managers and executives to sacrifice even quality and accuracy to leverage these savings. The development of AI technology is also starting to mean the automation of some work. this is likely to increase as the technology increases. There is also sometimes a failure to recognize and retain talent (especially new talent) at Sun Life. This company was much more fun to work for in the past....they seem lately to want to do less and less for their employees in terms of the perks and pleasant little touches that help to make one proud to work for a company,

Pros

Holidays off, okay pay, cross train in other areas that are needed

Cons

Managers, doesn’t keep advancement promises, always mentioning room for growth but when the opportunity presents itself they have an excuse for why right now is not a good time to move. Adds training for other departments that are short staffed but don’t compensate for all the different departments calls you are taking. Trying to take PTO is a pain, there are plenty employees so there should be no issues with taking time off
