Pros

Pay increases every six months (union). Do your work and leave the good part is you don’t have to bring work home.

Cons

Hard physical labor. Brutal weather conditions hot vs cold. If you get hurt on the job you will need extensive paperwork and clearance from your PCP to return to work because they do not provide accommodation even though the company advertise as if they do. If your job entails all those strenuous duties you must be able to do it at all times. The yard is run like a labor plant. You are as worthy as the work you produce. If you are a production worker you keep your personal log of all things that happen because blame runs downward.

Pros

They will hire new engineering undergraduates with limited or no prior work experience, when they have hiring waves. Wide range of teams to work for across many disciplines. Options to move around between teams within a division or change divisions are available. Can get to work directly with trades performing the work you organize or design. Submarines and carriers are cool. 8% retirement match is good if you plan on staying long-term or for your career.

Cons

Short-sighted upper management. Current leadership is increasingly draconian. I joined in part due to various perks which were later removed. Like anywhere, your immediate team management will make or break your experience here. Some teams lack the needed personnel. Leads to "putting out fires" constantly instead of being able to make headway with projects to improve processes or designs. Pay has gotten better but does not keep up with the level of experience. Feels like you will only be rewarded if you stay here your entire career. PTO could be better, especially as they removed sick days a number of years ago. Over investment into AI with no tangible benefit. Health insurance costs recently rose. Current plans for salaried employers nearly doubled in their monthly cost.
