Pros

It was an exciting industry to work in.

Cons

Management spent so much time hiring friends into VP roles. Then laid off 80 employees and tried to silence people as part of the layoff process. Good luck with that. Now the company is top heavy and left with an ill equipped VP later.

Pros

Controlant has its fun, where they spend money each quarter for teams to bond in activities/comradery. Dinners and activities are great, you feel appreciated for a brief moment. Spontaneously there may be food in the office, or a happy hour at the end of the day, random events put on by individuals hired FULL TIME to entertain the employees. I will also state that compensation and benefits during my time were generous. I had to ask and push to get to that point, but as a start-up they were willing to accommodate. Likely what made me a bigger target for layoffs.

Cons

Despite its fun moments, Controlant has struggled with management and growth for a long time. I speak as a former employee who was part of an organizational layoff, just to acknowledge bias. What started as a less than 100-person organization on my journey, quickly ballooned to near 600 individuals. Bloated by VP & Director titles at least several of the divisions saw 75% of employees with a title they certainly did not prove to deserve. This led to issues such as division of work, where we had plenty of people saying what they like, or what we should do, but never acting. Instead hired more or brought on consultants rather than....you know....doing the work. Despite more hires, the organization suffered with training down. Here you have VP's that led teams, have taken on 90% of the work and responsibility, but failed to delegate, creating bottlenecks in process. Next you have the silent layoffs. One day you're talking to a colleague and the next they're a greyed-out employee with all but a message that "XX is no longer with us." As if they passed away overnight. There is always a reason, some better than others, but employee morale for seeing their colleagues drop off like flies in a trap wasn't great. One day you ask "am I safe?" only for the next to be let go because we massively overestimated our potential. Does this seem like a rant? As a disgruntled and let go employee? Possibly, but at the time of writing some time as passed, and I only felt to share my thoughts as to warn what may be observed. There are good people working within Controlant, good friends who are supportive. But unfortunately, the structure they have created has challenged even the closest of ties. I do hope that people who have found themselves in past layoffs, or in companies with worse structure, do not get burned the same as I.
