Pros

BioNTech could be an appealing place for a local or domestic workforce to work, as Mainz is widely regarded as one of the best cities in Germany. For expats, while Mainz is located in the greater Frankfurt area, where the English-speaking population is relatively big, so you won't feel completely isolated if you don't speak German. There are still opportunities to connect with others, especially given the international nature of the region.

Cons

BioNTech currently lacks a clear long-term strategy, with its focus shifting primarily toward acquiring companies outside the EU, especially in China. This approach raises concerns about the lack of a cohesive vision for sustainable growth. The company's management structure is top-heavy, with an excessive number of VPs, Senior Directors, and Directors. This creates an "upside-down" pyramid that leads to inefficiencies, confusion, and decision-making bottlenecks. Middle management is caught in a constant state of urgency due to frequent and unpredictable tactical changes, creating a high-pressure environment and undermining long-term planning. Moreover, BioNTech is facing significant financial constraints, which hinder investment in critical areas such as updating outdated facilities and providing basic services for employees working from the office. This lack of resources could impact employee satisfaction and productivity, making it harder for the company to attract and retain talent. On top of that incredible bureaucracy and constant obstruction are the norm on a day-to-day basis, making it difficult to navigate and get things done efficiently. Remuneration at BioNTech is below the market standard and less competitive compared to other companies in the industry. Meaningful company benefits are typically reserved for senior roles, which are often occupied by long-tenured employees who joined during the company's peak success, largely driven by the COVID vaccine. The golden age is clearly over, and without significant changes and new product innovations, the company risks fading into the background. My advice before joining BioNTech: make sure you know exactly who you will be reporting to and conduct a thorough audit of the company beforehand. Without this, it could end up being a waste of time—and potentially money—especially if you're relocating from abroad. Personally, I am leaving as soon as possible due to the challenges and frustrations I've encountered.

Pros

- A good place to start your career if you don’t have experience. - You can learn a lot from its international and fast environment. - The company participates in a lot of sports and volunteering events and has many cultural event. - English speaking environment. - Home Office and flexible working hours - Bildungsurlaub

Cons

- The salaries are relatively low for a company of its size. - Power politics are very prevalent, where colleagues who accomplish a lot are not acknowledged, while those who communicate with their line managers in a more obedient way regardless of their performance are rewarded. - Promotions and learning opportunities are not distributed fairly. - Acknowledgement of contributions to patents are often lacking due to managers seeking a bigger share. - Intransparency and deliberate misinformation on the levels of upper and middle management. - No proper bonuses. Stock bonuses are kind of a scam and conditions are not communicated properly. - Instead of rehiring colleagues whose positions became redundant in active positions and training them accordingly like how big pharma in Germany typically do, it was resorted to dismissals and lay-offs. - Continued promotions and hirings for favored select few while many colleagues simultaneously face lay-offs. - Very weak and inexperienced workers council. - Management and HR avoid answering questions.

Pros

If you are lucky you might be in a good project where you can learn and deliver something meaningful

Cons

Too many cons...The past months and for the foreseeable future there is a lot of job uncertainty with layoffs. Very toxic environment which is fostered or ingored by the management . If you are not lucky enough to have a good team and supervisor, then you cannot expect much. There is no meaningfull feedback over the year, no development plan (or if there is any, it can be vague or not followed), the expectations are too high without any actual reward and no recognition of any hard work. There is favouritism where certain people who get along with their supervisor get promoted very quickly and others are left behind (sometimes on purpose). If you speak up about an issue then most likely you will be punished or even accused of being difficult to work with, and never get promoted. Unfortunately, There is no 360 review or an exit interview as a process, so you cannot give feedback for your superiors. Good people are leaving the company in mass...

Pros

Friendly and collaborative colleagues who are generally willing to support one another. Employees are encouraged to raise ideas and flag inefficiencies. Exposure to various processes allows for learning across functions.

Cons

Communication from senior management lacks clarity and direction, often leaving teams without a clear understanding of goals or priorities. Internal processes are inefficient, with redundant work being repeated across teams. Suggestions for improving efficiency are frequently overlooked or not acted upon, resulting in missed opportunities for productivity gains. There is little follow-through on initiatives that could streamline operations, creating a sense of stagnation. Management often appears reactive rather than proactive, with a focus on status quo instead of continuous improvement.

Passionate but poorly led

Pros

There's a lot of energetic and passionate people at BNT, working on some potentially marvellous and world-changing drugs. And the company does want to "walk to the talk", be innovative and do things right.

Cons

Unfortunately, the reality is that BioNTech is chaotic and poorly run. There are almost no processes or structure, so much is done at the last moment and in a slap-dash way that it's almost a company standard. Management would rather show up at public appearances and photo ops or talk loftily about "mission" and "passion" than try to make the company work. This doesn't bode well for the future.

Pros

- Competitive salary with good benefits. - Hybrid model with "flexwork" possibility (working from abroad up to a certain amount of days per year). - State of the art IT equipment and software tools.

Cons

- Sometimes workload can be overwhelming. - Too much "politics" in mid to upper management, which ends affecting teams and leading people to pursue other opportunities.
