Pros

There are some genuinely excellent people working for this company that are hard-working, kind, generous, and incredibly intelligent. It was a pleasure working with most of the people there. It is a shame that these people are exclusively up to and including team leader level, not company or even department management.

Cons

I cannot speak for compound management or biology directly, only chemistry and general company management. The management system simply does not work, and concerns for stability and even basic human welfare are either ignored or met with anger, belligerence, and gaslighting behaviour. From the start, you’re made to feel very small, and there is such an enormous atmosphere of belittling if you’re not one of “the favourites”. If you are, however, any and all despicable behaviour you decide to inflict on your colleagues is swept under the rug, hidden, and you’re told not to “create a toxic environment” by opposing this. I can say with certainty that there is no equality amongst the staff here, and no intention to fix that – as demonstrated by the poor retention of female scientists in the chemistry department. There is no career advancement and there are no benefits – unless you count the car park on the side of the motorway as one, which the company clearly seems to. These are trying times to be a small company in this sector, that much is clear, but issues of company instability and attempted perseverance through these difficult times have been handled incredibly poorly by all of the management team, in particular by those allegedly working for HR. The recent round of redundancies that were made was unfortunate, and I do not deny that not only was it necessary but also very difficult for those making the decisions of who had to go. That aside, the lack of communication, the very heavily flawed way in which the process went ahead, and the ignorance of anxious human beings during this process left everyone in the chemistry department completely devastated. Personally, I know that I will never forget the ordeal that I went through, and I doubt anyone working there still or not will either. The worst part of it was that it would have taken the smallest of kind gestures or communication to prevent such a level of damage, and even this was too much of an ask. Bottom line, you are very much made to feel sub-human working here. If you value your physical or mental health, don’t do it.

Pros

There are some brilliant, highly skilled chemists working at BioAscent and it was fantastic to work with them. The workload was predictable.

Cons

Please take heed of other similar reviews on this platform, they unfortunately reflect the reality within the chemistry section at BioAscent. The culture here amongst management diminished staff confidence and professional worth, leaving myself and others feeling undervalued as chemists and people. There is no credible path for progression, improvement or career development but instead a career dead-end. Furthermore, there are no meaningful perks to working here and no performance related recognition. Given the tight fiscal environment, instead of paying employees a liveable wage, even basic professional recognition would suffice but was notably absent. All of this can be overlooked perhaps in the dire chemistry market of recent years however, management's behaviour during recent redundancy period was unforgivable. Redundancies are regrettable but understandable in the context of the difficult market conditions for smaller CROs. I think everyone at BioAscent understood the reality of the situation and why drastic change was necessary. The problem is the serious lack of duty of care shown by management towards employees during the difficult period. Decisions with profound professional and personal consequences were made with no transparency and compassion. Scoring was arbitrary, highly reckless and deeply insensitive in how individual circumstances were treated. Communications from management and HR were sparse, terse and at times highly confrontational and unapologetic. This was completely unacceptable, especially as basic human decency was all that was called for. There was no meaningful support for affected staff and a staggering lack of compassion or even acknowledgement of the human impact. The mismanagement and poor leadership resulted in the process becoming deeply personal and caused significant distress to many colleagues. This is an experience that I will never forget and has left a permanent black mark on this company. The incredibly poor management at BioAscent is a considerable shame. Given the high skill levels of the chemists working there and the wealth of chemistry talent available within Scotland more generally, this could have been a great company. However, it will remain an awful place to work unless significant changes are made at the top.

Pros

There are some dedicated and hardworking scientists in the company who were fantastic to work with.

Cons

For anyone reading these reviews and assuming they represent isolated complaints from a small number of disgruntled employees, I would urge you to take them seriously. The issues described are not anomalies, but reflect deep-seated problems within the company, and particularly within the chemistry department. The working environment is extremely poor, with minimal to zero support for employees. The chemistry department operates under an authoritarian management style that fosters a culture of fear and anxiety. Although some lower-level managers privately acknowledge the problem, they are generally unwilling to challenge the director. Instead, individuals prefer to protect their own position, leaving their team members to rely on peer support instead. The company’s senior management team are aware of the issue; however, as their own day-to-day working conditions are unaffected, there is little incentive for them to take action. During my time at the company, I witnessed behaviour from some individuals that I would characterise as being bullying, intimidating, dishonest, and discriminatory in nature. I observed colleagues become visibly distressed as a result of their treatment, including instances where individuals were reduced to tears. Several former employees have admitted that part of their reason for leaving was the negative effect the environment had on their mental health. There is also a clear and widely recognised culture of favouritism within the chemistry department. Expectations and standards are not applied consistently, and it is broadly understood that different individuals are subject to different rules. Some employees appear to be actively protected by their line manager (despite appalling behaviour), while others are subject to disproportionate scrutiny and criticism regardless of performance. This inconsistency contributes significantly to low morale and undermines trust in, and respect for, leadership. There is very much a collective sense of “it’s not what you do; it’s who you are” regarding development opportunities or promotions. In relation to career progression and rewards, promotions have been paused for several years, with no clear indication of when this situation will change. During this time, employees have not received cost-of-living increases, despite rising inflation. As a result, staff are expected to take on increased workloads for what amounts to a reduction in pay in real terms. There are also no performance-related bonuses or incentive schemes in place to recognise additional effort or high performance. Feedback and positive recognition are limited, and genuine, unprompted praise is almost non-existent. Consequently, many employees are left uncertain about how their performance is viewed by their line manager or project leader. The recent redundancy process has only served to highlight the spectacular incompetence of those involved in its implementation. Considering the gravity of the situation and the outcomes for those affected, the company should have done everything in its power to ensure that decisions were made fairly, consistently, and without bias. Instead, the process was left in the hands of its most inept managers, with predictable consequences.
