Why do we do it?
At some point, we’re all customers. So we know how it feels to have a good business interaction versus a bad one. We built Intercom for ourselves as customers who expect more from companies, and as a business knowing there is realvalue in it, primarily and profitably. It’s the right thing to do overall.

In 2011, Eoghan, Des and the other cofounders were building Exceptional, a bug-tracking company. During this time, they frequented a local coffee shop, 3FE. They were envious of how Colin, the owner of 3FE, knew and engaged with his customers in a personal, authentic way, every time they came in. Exceptional had thousands of customers, but Eoghan & Des had only ever met a handful of them, and certainly didn’t know them well.
In an attempt to replicate their experience at 3FE, Eoghan & Des invented an in-app messaging tool (the first in the industry) that let them communicate with Exceptional customers while they were logged in. Because the chat tool was inside of a web app, they could send customers personalized messages based on exactly what they were doing, versus bulk emails that felt spammy and stiff.
The tool worked so well, they decided to offer it externally under the name of “Intercom”, and it took off. This tool was the beginning of Intercom: Eoghan moved to San Francisco to open the first office that year. The rest is history.
