      Senior Instructional Designer Interview

      24 Jun 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Zelus (MA) in Jun 2024

      Interview

I would not apply here as they seem very unorganized and dysfunctional. They ultimately ended up wasting my time so I withdrew my application. The first red flag was that they sent me an automated request via Indeed for me to complete a PowerPoint and Excel assessment that would require 20 minutes of my time. This was sent immediately after I applied. I chose to ignore the request as I lost interest upon seeing this since my skills were evident through my portfolio which I already provided them in my application. Surprisingly, three weeks later, I was still invited to participate in an interview which made me wonder why the original assessment I skipped was even requested. The second red flag was that the interviewer seemed nervous and did not appear very informed about the overall interview process and how many stages were required. I told her that this was very important for me to know since I had just received another offer that I was considering. I indicated that I could wait a week max for their decision. Rather than telling me that our timelines were not aligned, she proceeded to ask me to complete a PowerPoint assignment. I told her that I would only complete it if she could ensure that her hiring team was able to make a decision within a week and make an offer by then if they thought I was a good fit. She said that my timeline was fine and asked me to proceed with the assignment. I spent many hours on it since they asked for it to be detailed and polished. I submitted my completed assignment to her in a day and a half as she requested and awaited her feedback. When two more days went by with no response, I emailed her again and reminded her that I was on a tight timeline. This is where things began to fall apart from a process standpoint. She waited a total of 2.5 days to respond that her team had "received" my submission even though I had submitted it two days earlier. By this point, I was expecting her to say that they had "reviewed" it instead. When I responded that I had to make a decision in two days regarding the other opportunity, she waited until the end of the day to respond that the hiring team wanted to schedule a second interview. I was upset that she didn't share this requirement when we originally met given my timeline and the work I was putting into this process. I responded to her that since this decision for another interview arrived so late given my timeline, the interview would have to be scheduled the following day based on how much time I had left to respond to the other company. When she then dragged her feet further on scheduling the interview and it became obvious that it would not be scheduled in time, I withdrew my application. She never apologized for misinforming me about their timeline and asking me to waste so many hours on the assignment given that I made them fully aware of my own timeline. Please don't make the same mistake I did. They will drag out the process without any proper planning or consideration for you. My guess is that they did this to earlier candidates as well who they likely turned down before deciding to pursue me instead. Luckily, even though I wasted my time on this whole situation, I still had time to accept the other company's offer. Stay away from Zelus. It is apparent there is a lot of dysfunction in their organization.
