      I interviewed at Shopify

      Interview

If you are a professional or have any background in good quality Customer Service don't waste your time. Apply + answering a question of a "shopowner"(this is where Google starts to be your best friend) You will get an email back with another question of a so-called "merchant" - hello Google. Life Story interview - don't worry you basically need to know nothing about customer service/care – interviewer has no HR background, they just want to find out if you will "fit in" - want some kool-aid kiddo? Next up the technical interview/Gauntlet. It is a role-play with another interviewer (not the one from the life story interview) who will act as a merchant and you will be the Shopify employee (too many different titles for this role). It is split up into three parts - chat, phone, and email, don't worry the phone part will not happen. Interviewed more than once - never had a phone call. Two chats at the same time (15 min total), afterwards you will get feedback. Important if you ever worked in a customer service environment this is the time to forget ALL about it. When you see your question - google it and the rest should be a done deal, just act like you are talking to your closest but also long lost friend (minus the emojis). Find a way to offer some information they didn't ask about while answering their question (best in a step by step approach), ask questions about their shop etc. Oh I forgot to mention – they say the correct answers are not important but they are! Long story short give the correct answer, ask questions about the merchant's shop, their kids, how their parents are ... Shopify is looking for somebody who is small talking with customers that have a problem. Apparently, they have enough money/time to hire people to do that, if you think so, you missed out on the not so fun reviews about working at Shopify and being the "doormat" for merchants. More kool-aid? (favorite comment: the job is dreadful, exhausting, and downright anxiety-inducing) Drumroll... for your well-deserved feedback. As I said before I have done the technical interview more than once. It’s funny because if you did A the first time around and you got feedback to try it with B and then you apply again trying to do B they actually give you the feedback to do A. If you are lost reading this ... welcome to the club of not having a clue what they are looking for. My guess is they are just looking for first-time employees out of school not having any idea about customer service or how to work efficiently, Shopify wants to create their own set of people not questioning the how. Small talk and being every merchants best friend you will definitely have the time to do that when working in a remote set up chatting with up to 3 people, answering emails, and maybe taking phone calls?! Still haven't looked up the horrible reviews of employees? Now you are wondering about the best place to work stuff right? Most employees say that the company per se is not bad but their job is, the management is, etc. and let's be honest no rating agency, magazine, or what ever can afford to say that a company worth a couple of billions is a "bad place to work" right? After the feedback, you will have 10 minutes for an email response then another feedback will be served on a silver platter WARNING everything is based on how Shopify is doing things, if you did it differently you are wrong. Don't ask me how you are supposed to know that because there is just general information you get before the technical interview- the first time employee or deleting your past working memory comes in handy!!! Anyways, you are close to the end after another email (time frame 15 minutes) you are done, no more feedback, nothing, just close the chat you are done. I never made it any further as I did A first then B because they asked me to but actually they wanted A and requested C after a while to boomerang back to B. The next steps would be a reference check, decision making (not the final one) another interview with another person, and if you played this little ping pong match long enough you maybe (really maybe) will get an offer letter. As the technical interview is the main part you want to succeed in my tip is to be yourself (if you are a not questioning kind of person if you are present yourself differently), don't worry about anything just have a good time and yes I mean it, no qualification, no past work experience will help you and if you never ever work before or did something completely different go and apply for this position you will get the job! All that said, I am not a troll just sharing my experience. I have a job, applying for Shopify was more a "see what will happen" kind of thing. See this as a little guide, don't base your decision if you want to apply or not on this just apply!!! Cheers.

      Question 1

For real don't worry. First interview be the kool-aid drinking friend everybody likes. For the technical interview use Google and forget about everything else.
