      Sales Manager Interview

      10 Apr 2011
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Macy's (Los Angeles, CA) in Nov 2010

      Interview

Applied online after speaking with an HR Rep on campus at a Career Fair. I had been offered an internship position with the company the year prior but had ultimately turned it down for a different internship. Now I was looking for a full time position and this program seemed alright; they really emphasized your ability to move up in the company. Macy's likes to promote from within and this college training program is kind of the fast track to success etc etc. I submitted my resume and did two, one on one interviews on campus. From there I was asked to come down to Los Angeles for 2nd round interviews. So I went down to LA with about 8 other students from my University for two days of interviews. The first day was mostly informational about what to expect in the interviews and also gave us some homework in order to best prepare for one part of the interview events the following day. Then they took us out to dinner and had a grand ol time and such. The next day started early, and there were 4 interview processes we had to participate in. There was one normal, one on one interview which for the most part was centered around the STAR behavioral interview method. There was one other one on one interview based on the personality assessment I had taken a few months prior. I had taken it a few months prior because I had also interviewed for their internship program, but everyone else had taken it the week before. Then there was also a group project, which was timed, in which we had to pretend as though we were all sales managers for different departments. We had to analyze which departments needed the most help, which sales associates needed to be coached more and other ways in which to increase the overall performance of each department. Finally, we had a 5 minute "presentation" I guess you could say, in which we were given data from a certain store and also the performance of a few of the associates. From the data we had to decide which sales associate we would choose to give more training and why, and back up our reasoning etc etc. It was quite a full day of activities and interviews, and my heart wasn't really in it because I wasn't sure if I truly wanted to be working in retail in the first place. I think the people I interviewed with sensed this because I ultimately wasn't given a job offer even though they said my performance was solid across all of the interview sessions. At any rate I received an offer from Target for a similar position a few weeks after the interviews with Macy's in LA and am much happier with that offer.
