I did a walk-in job interview during the hiring job fair. I applied for the job on their computer kiosk. Then they put me in for an interview on the same day.
I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Macy's (Sacramento, CA) in Oct 2011
Interview
I applied online and received an email a couple of days later inviting me to schedule for an interview. I scheduled my interview that was about a week and a half later.
I was about 15 minutes early to the interview and waited on the red couch. The lady decided to interview me then and there since she was done with the previous interviewee. She brought me into a room where I waited for another 5 minutes while she went to deal with an issue dealing with another employee. Eventually she came back and asked me a few of questions that were "tell me about a time where...." and I didn't think I was going to get the job because I had no prior retail experience and I mainly talked about school experience. The last few questions she asked were regarding which department I was willing to work in. I told her I was willing to work in any department because that's how I would gain the most experience. I felt that was what sold her. (Luckily before my interview I was reading through these past few interview reviews on this website. ) She then proceeded to tell me that starting pay for this position was $8/hr and she asked me if I was okay with that and I said yes. She then explained that she would go see if any positions were available and if not then I would be "put on bench" which I guess means if there were any openings I would be called for it. After waiting for about 5 minutes she called me into another room and said there was an opening for the Fashion Access/Jewelry Department which happened to be her department and asked me if that was okay and I gladly accepted. After accepting I signed a couple of papers and I chose a day for orientation which happens to be tomorrow. Overall I would say the interview/hiring process took no longer than 20 minutes. I was done 3 minutes after my actual interview appointment time.
As others have said, I recommend wearing all black to your interview. If not all black, then mostly black and make sure you look presentable. Also be flexible and willing to work in different departments, since it's holiday season, they're not looking for someone who only wants to work in one department.

Interview
Answer first question starting with One recorded video and then followed up with multiple recorded responses to additional questions. Pretty simple and straightforward. Dress up on the top and wear whatever on the bottom.
Was an easy phone interview that only took a couple of minutes. I was only asked maybe 3 questions at most. Questions were sales experience, job history, and what I can work
