      Product Manager Interview

      18 Mar 2009
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Park City, UT
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at Backcountry (Park City, UT) in Dec 2008

      Interview

After an initial phone conversation with the in-house recruiter, and then a follow up phone screen with the hiring manager, I was scheduled for a day of on-site interviews. I came in and met with a cross-section of managers from the different teams I would be working with as PM -- Engineering, Marketing, Project Mgmt, Design, and even the CMO. Overall, the process was positive except for the fact I did not get an offer. Later the recruiter explained that my lack of consumer-facing experience made some of the other candidates a closer fit for the position. As a side note, Backcountry.com has a interesting retail philosophy -- it is described as "avarice vs. altruism". Basically, they seek to be transparent, customer-centric, and to provide exceptional service with the intent to build customer loyalty and "altruistic" behaviors. The hope is that these altruistic customers will contribute reviews, share product experiences, and answer discussion board questions. The culture is also very "outdoor friendly" -- nearly everyone has multiple outdoor sport hobbies -- biking, hiking, skiing, boarding...

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Backcountry (Park City, UT)

      Interview

Not difficult, but poor communication, very little structure to interview, and big miss on compensation expectation between recruiter and hiring manager. Overall, definitely felt like my time, and there time, had been wasted in the process.
