      Applied Scientist Interview

      18 Mar 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Amazon (Austin, TX) in Feb 2019

      Interview

Overall it was a strange experience. I meet all the requirement in the job description with MS degree and 1-3 years of work experience. I have a MS degree and 6+ years of work experience. It started out with an email from their recruiter saying they received my application online and the team was impressed with my resume. Then I talked to the recruiter on the phone for 30 minutes. He asked 2 business questions and expected a statistical/machine learning solutions and I gave him. I thought my answer was scientifically legit. It was a Friday. Then 2 days later I even emailed the recruiter and provided a more thorough and detailed answer with equations for one of his 2 questions. Then all the sudden I found out online that my application status has changed from "under consideration" to "no longer under consideration" . I thought that was rude, not even explained why I was no longer under consideration or sent a thank you email. Plus if their technical team was impressed with my resume I would think I would at least get a chance to talk to them and show them what I got in statistics and machine learning. Does Amazon even record the phone interview and review how their recruiter performs during interview? I would expect some kind of transparency. Then I saw another job posting with the same title but requiring 4 years of work experience. So I applied for the second position again. The next day when I went online to check my status, it changed from "submitted" to "no longer under consideration". Apparently, this was done by the same recruiter since the second position I applied for has the same title but more experience. I wondered if this recruiter is prejudiced. He didn't sound nice either. I was surprised how Amazon hire all these recruiters to work for them. He simply stopped me from stepping in the front door to talk to the hiring manager even though their technical team was impressed with my resume? Anyway, it was all weird. Good luck.
