I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Cambridge, MA)
Interview
IF YOU ARE A DYNAMIC AND HIGHLY EXPERIENCED MANAGER FROM NON MONOTONOUS, NON GEEKY AND DIVERSE BACKGROUND !
Don’t apply ! because you are awesome and the human (the 99% of us) world needs you and your human instincts! NOT ROBOTS!
The process was exactly the same as other reviews of program manager described it on Glassdoor. But there in no magic bullet ! The overall experience was so bad that wasting my time for a NO Feedback ! is just not acceptable.
Overall I can say from my 10000 feet observation about what they seek from you is
1. Do have what it takes to execute this job (phone screenings)
2. Do you have anything beyond in your experience arsenal, compared to what’s required by a job (face to face)
3. How would your management execution style fit in with the work culture and people mindsets.(face to face)
4. Who are you as a person(face to face)
If and only if, all those parameters check out then you get hired else NO ONE CARES FOR YOUR TIME! because they don’t want you to get a feedback and have you improve for their competitors.
They bring you in and may be will ask for water as Courtesy usually not! Per reviews and my experience The whole process is an INTERROGATION! they want to grill you because honestly it’s so busy there that you won’t have any work life balance ever !!! You have to work hard so their CEO can get richer and brag about how pioneering he is he wants to be in your kids history book of legends and all the while you get paid below market. Yes below market! The leadership principles are their 14 separate carrots on a stick for you to chase around to get their work done while you pat yourself on the back and wow around like crazy depressed person
Overall I only recommend those straight out of college to apply and may be write stories around the “what if’s and tell me a time...“ like interviews for all senior or mid level roles because honestly it’s not a place for Smart individuals or management professionals, they need one track mindset individuals with robotic articulation abilities to fit in with their geek cultures. I met individuals with may be 5-7years of real experience and were leading charge for huge parts of the org because they had some science degrees and certifications...that’s insane ! And ask them what they do at amazon you get the robotic answers in two lines with zero expressions. Out of all those who interviewed me only the hiring manager had expressions while one of interviewer could not even pronounce words properly !!! I am shocked at the fact that they seek people with no character but all the geek knowledge to robotically lead the org. Sounds like a zombie culture to me but it is what it is.
I read review of some one declining an offer !! KUDOS TO YOU ! I would have probably done the same in your situation !
Interview questions [3]
Question 1
Tell me a time you had over step management to get your point of view.
Describe a problem in your projects how you managed to remove it what was the out come. (Yes they do ask multiple questions in one breathe to make it appear as one)
Did a test task and was called by HR almost immediately for the next round. But salary range (full packet with stock and benefits) and return to office policy did nit much my expectations
very standard. the interviewers had a set of questions to ask about the LPs so we can anticipate beforehand. But I think I got ghosted in the end. One of the interviewers told me about the 2 & 5 rule but its been more than 2 weeks since my last interview and still no response from anyone so idk what happened.
Lengthy, messy schedule, interviews canceled last minute, interviewer late. Rude, disrespectful and dismissive approach toward candidate. Majority of people were from a different team so had no clue about the specifics of the position when asked in the final Q&A. If they treat you like this before joining, can’t imagine after. Application withdrawn.
