"Now that I've graduated and started my full time job as a developer for Twilio's Developer Voices team, I realize that there is so much value in being a self taught programmer." Diane Phan, Developer for Technical Content shares her journey from intern to full time hire.
Last week for Filipino- American Heritage Month the Twilipinos ERG hosted a dried floral arrangement class with Orange moon floral. The class walked through the basic elements of floral design, how to properly use dried florals, the mechanics of making an arrangement, color theory and placement "To celebrate this occasion, it's important to open the circle; support and showcase small Filipino businesses especially during this time of Covid. The opportunity to hear more about their experience and expertise as a Filipino entrepreneur in their field is something we want to share with everyone." Regina Ramos, Global Onboarding Experience Specialist
Twilio’s Early In Career team hosted the Twilio experience: from HBCU to Software Engineer. The event was strictly for HBCU students where Tiwong Nace Jr, Morehouse student and 2020 Software Engineer intern and Ben Stephens, Software Engineer at Twilio-Hatch Alumni and Black ERG lead shared their personal experience as Black Twilions and provided tips on ways to be successful when transitioning from an HBCU to a Software Engineering role. Giovanni Bonadie, EIC program coordinator and Andrew EIC Programs Lead at Twilio helped navigate the conversation and played a fun game to help participants learn more about Twilio. Thanks to all that joined. Twilio is committed to increasing its representation of Black and LatinX talent across all levels. This year we have doubled our HBCU and HIS efforts to build engagement with underrepresented communities. "I think it is such an exciting time to be at Twilio. It is great to be a part of company that is growing at scale and also redefining what it means to lead, empower & inspire a diverse workforce. I never expected my experience at Twilio to be what it has been and it has been a great work environment to be in. Moreover, being able to witness the authenticity & investment that senior leadership has put into driving Twilio D&I efforts has been great to see. Senior leadership both in the US & EMEA has shown an increasing propensity to listen, learn and make their best efforts to level up Twilio, thereby improving the great culture that we are fortunate to have. Lastly, it has been great to be a part of the ERG-Black Twilions. It is always so active, informative and has really driven what it means to feel a sense of belonging despite being across the pond, which is cornerstone & essence of the countless things that make Twilio special."Frank Yaw-Owusu, Ecosystem Developer, EMEA, Twilio Startups
“LatinX heritage month is an opportunity to acknowledge and cherish my Dominican-Puerto Rican roots whilst living far away from fellow LatinX community. LatinX heritage has a wide range of magnificent traditions shared by a common language Spanish and Portuguese. There is so much to learn and enjoy! Listen and dance to Merengue, Salsa, or Samba, and of course experience all the delicious food!” Farah Royer, Carrier Relations Manager-SMS, based in Munich, Germany
“The WFH world is especially trying on corporate Physical Security and Safety professionals as our entire being is our support of people being in offices. When your life is a bit sideways and everyday is basically the same as the day before, its time to change it up in a big way! The Twilio Physical Security, Health & Safety Team held a "formal" day from head to toe, which we do not even do when we are in offices!! Great to change up the morning routine, care about the smallest of details about oneself and looking forward to "loosening up" at the end of the day. It was hard for everyone to temper their smiles to take a "formal" photo! I love this team!” Todd Pulver, Director, Physical Security, Health & Safety
It's been a busy year at Twilio and employees are navigating a lot both personally and professionally. Twilio took the time to pause and appreciate all of the incredible things Twillions continue to build each day! To celebrate, our People team organized appreciation swag boxes to be sent to each employee across the globe. To all Twillions, thank you for all that you do!
In the United Kingdom, Black History Month has been celebrated every October since 1987. Black History Month is a nationwide celebration of African and Caribbean culture, arts and history, which recognizes the achievements and contributions of Black people to British society. Throughout the month of October, Twilio UK will remotely host an array of activities in support of Black History Month UK, brought to you by the Black Twilions ERG, and your London and Cambridge site council.
We are so proud of the Twilio.org team and the work they do to ignite positive change across the globe. Repost from @natashawhit Employee Impact Manager at Twilio. “A year ago, we launched a program called WePledge, which is all about encouraging Twilions to commit to giving 1% of their time and/or financial resources to social good. Since then, Twilions have given over $1 million and 7,000 hours to charities around the world!”🙌 Last week we open-sourced WePledge, providing a guidebook for other companies who want to adopt the program and encouraging individuals like you reading this right now, yes you, to personally take the 1% Pledge. And when that happens, you get to choose a charitable organization to receive a $100 donation (on @Twilio’s dime). So go for it! Text PLEDGE to 44663.
“People often forget that we are all human beings despite our differences, background and stories. Just as for any other culture, having a LatinX heritage comes with a big responsibility. Truly understanding where you come from prepares you to make a significant impact in society. We are seen as joyful and kind people and those are our most powerful tools to make that impact and build a better world. All of us should always remember that.” Sofia Acevedo, Product Operations Specialist based in Bogota
