National Disability Employment Awareness Month (N.D.E.A.M.) is marked throughout October. In 1962, the word โphysicallyโ was removed to be more inclusive of the contributions of people with other disabilities. This celebrationโs history started decades ago in 1945 when Congress enacted Public Law 176, which birthed what we know today as N.D.E.A.M. As we continue to witness the destruction caused by Hurricane Helene and the aftermath of the storm, our hearts are heavy for the loss of life and the devastated communities. We are keeping those impacted top of mind and have initiated support. Our mobile medicine teams have made dozens of trips to transport patients and deliver supplies โ via our Atrium Health MedCenter Air and Wake Forest Baptist AirCare air ambulance teams, as well as with our ambulances on the ground. We expect our MED-1 mobile hospital to be deployed to provide much-needed medical services in the disaster area. Additionally, Atrium Health Georgia EMS is assisting with search and rescue missions, transporting patients and answering emergency calls. Our organization and our teammates are committed to providing immediate and long-term disaster response and recovery for our communities. Meet Hannah a Pediatric Physical Therapist at Atrium Health. Growing up in the Charlotte area, Hannahโs journey to becoming a physical therapist began with an unexpected turn. A knee injury sustained while playing varsity volleyball introduced her to physical therapy, sparking a fascination with body mechanics and injury prevention. โFrom the age of 17, I knew I wanted to become a physical therapist,โ she shared. In 2016, she graduated from Wingate University as a Doctor of Physical Therapy, fulfilling that early passion. Hannah is currently a physical therapist and lead therapist at Carolinas Rehabilitation-Wendover Pediatrics. In her role, she manages clinic operations, optimizes patient schedules, and provides essential support to her team. She treats a diverse patient population, including those with torticollis, developmental delays, orthopedic injuries, concussions, and more. โThe resiliency of children is truly inspiring,โ she said. โI have the privilege of being a part of a child's journey, and I get to help their parent or caregiver feel supported as well.โ Hannah aims to grow her vestibular and concussion caseload and expand pediatric specialty programs, including serial casting, aquatic therapy, and potentially starting an intensive therapy program. Reflecting on her journey with Atrium Health, Hannah looks forward to the future of pediatric therapy. โThere are some exciting things happening!โ she says. Meet Matthew, an orthopedic trauma nurse in the adult acute care unit at Atrium Health. Matthew describes his experience working in acute care as both rewarding and challenging. "I get to experience my patients' healing journeys in real time, and I celebrate with them when their day to go home arrives," he says. "I work alongside an incredible team to ensure that patients are stable and significantly recovered from their injuries before they take the next steps in their journey." One of the things Matthew enjoys most about his role is the relationships he forms with patients and their families. "The emotional aspect of healing is just as important as the physical," he shares. "I find ways to build a relationship with patients so they can trust me and allow me to provide the best care possible. To see them smile or laugh during their recovery gives me a sense of hope." Matthew was drawn to Atrium Health because of the organizationโs reputation for growth opportunities. "Atrium Health holds the highest standard when it comes to professionalism, and I wanted to be part of a strong team," he says. Outside of work, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family and friends, getting lost in a good book and exploring the outdoors. In honor of National Surgical Technologists Week, join us in celebrating our rockstar surg techs! Meet Brionna, a Surgical Technologist at Atrium Health. Brionna was inspired to pursue a career in healthcare by her grandfather, a Vietnam Veteran who faced numerous health challenges. "I always wanted to be part of his healthcare team, and the team aspect ultimately sold me," she says. Brionna found her passion for surgical technology, drawn in by the hands-on nature of the work. She is at the forefront of patient care, ensuring every surgical procedure runs smoothly. She is responsible for anticipating the surgeon's needs, maintaining a sterile field and delivering high-quality care. "The ability to multitask, critically think and anticipate what's needed are key parts of my role. You need to have some thick skin too," she shares. What makes her job especially rewarding is the opportunity to be on the front lines, making a unique difference in patients' lives daily. Atrium Healthโs commitment to growth and development has allowed Brionna to give back by precepting the next generation of surgical technologists. "Iโm truly blessed to be part of this team and to have participated in some unique and complex surgeries," she says. Brionnaโs advice for anyone considering a career as a surgical technologist is to โkeep an open mind and be willing to learn something new every day.โ Learn more about Surgical Technologists Careers.
