I worked at VMware full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company is amazing to work for, from the salary package to the compensation and perks. They look after their staff extremely well!

The team atmosphere is amazing with every employee throughout the company willing to help at the drop of a hat.

The training is second to none, they provide everything and anything to ensure you become an expert in your assigned field. They also offer budget and material for other technologies within VMware and other Vendors (i.e. Cisco).

    Cons

GSS is the support centre for a Vendor and expect most of the problems to be complex and relating to software issues rather than customer configuration issues.

The NSX Network Engineer role has little to do with Networking. While it is great to understand Networking concepts, many of the issues relates to software bugs, DB issues or other attributing factors which are non-network related.

    Advice to Management

When recruiting explain the above to them, don't mislead them into thinking it is a Network Engineering/PSO role. Explain that while understanding of Networking is key, this will be a limited part of the job. Linux, DB admin and log trawling will be a large part of the role.

There are many positives to working for VMware, but ensure potential employees know what type of role they will be doing from the first moment.

    Pros

Benefits package is first class and you are rewarded for doing great work.
A high concentration of truly talented people means you are driven to excel yourself.
The company now has a clear strategy and the product stack is the industry standard.
The stock options are an exceptional deal and sees double digit returns

    Cons

International travel is economy class only unless you are VP, when you travel a lot to Asia and the States it can be tiring.
One slight negative or working with highly technical teams is that process can be alien to them and can cause frustration when working with them.
