I have been working at PetSmart part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -So many animals!!
-Company is doing some pretty good things
-Many options within the company--move up or change position
    -15% discount for employees
-Lots of opportunities to learn more about animals

    Cons

-Base pay is pretty low for all the sh*t you deal with (literally)
-Work environment completely dependent on management and coworkers
    -Customers can be RUDE.
-Have to see a lot of mistreated animals
-Company focuses on many different goals and it gets very overwhelming and makes it difficult to be genuine

    Advice to Management

The focus on email capture AND conversion is a bit much. It's getting pretty difficult to care about customers when I'm in fear of getting written up for not capturing enough emails. I'd rather see more focus on customer care because that seems to get more returning customers than coupons.

I worked at PetSmart full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Customers are generally happy, pay is better than a lot of retail places.

    Cons

If your manager doesn't care about animals, you'll sell a lot of them to people who don't care about their welfare. The compassion fatigue can be rough.

    Advice to Management

Back up your employees, stop selling habitats that are too small, especially fishbowls.

    "Good Short-Term Job"

I have been working at PetSmart part-time

    Pros

My coworkers, the customers, and the pets make this job worth it. My coworkers all genuinely care about pets, which is nice. Getting to see a ton of pets is one of the best things about the job. I've seen tons of different kinds of dogs, cats on leashes, and even bearded dragons while working here. It's very rewarding. My manager is great at giving me time off when I need it. I also make a decent amount of money for this being a part-time job, as I was given an ample amount of hours. I've learned a lot about customer service and it's very rewarding to help out pet parents. My store also recently got head sets, which significantly makes communication easier. Our break room is also really nice (despite the fact that the vending machine is ancient)!

    Cons

I applied for a Pet Care position. I was asked if I minded doing some cashier work, which I didn't. But I never switched over to Pet Care, and I was told by a coworker that I would have to become the best cashier first in order to rise to Pet Care. I found this really misleading, especially when a new hire was sent straight to Pet Care a couple months later.
Additionally, you hardly get any training. This was my first cashier job, and it was a lot to learn. After being on a computer for 6 hours, you shadow a cashier for maybe 45 minutes before getting put on the register. And as a cashier, you do a ton of work. I had to learn a lot on my own. It didn't help that when I would ask my manager questions, he would act like I should already know how to do it. This is also true for when the store has new promotions going on, but no one ever bothers to tell me.
I also never had a set weekly schedule. My shifts would be all over the place. It didn't help that my store really needed to hire some more cashiers, and I was working a lot of 7-8 hour shifts.

    Advice to Management

Please understand that cashiers can only do so much when it comes to email capture and Puppy Guides. I understand that this is a retail position, but management can be too pushy about sales. Also, the sticker training idea is so arbitrary; it depends on whether the main manager is there or if he happens to see you doing something right. I felt like my worth is in stickers on my name badge, which is ridiculous.
