An occasionally rewarding, but managerially frustrating working environment.
Pros
The clients; while many were challenging, to put it mildly, there were some truly outstanding clients who truly sought to improve their writing through repeated business, often conducting interesting work or research, and sincerely appreciated editors' efforts and willingness to offer suggestions for improvement. The staff; truly, the team of editors is comprised of some remarkably brilliant and accomplished individuals from myriad professional and academic backgrounds. That they all ended up at Papercheck was and remains a mystery to me.
Cons
Missing the opportunity to continue engaging with some of my favorite clients is, without exaggeration, my sole regret upon leaving this company. To say that our management was unresponsive would be a tremendous understatement. Simple requests (and new ideas to improve both customer service and back-end workflow) went unanswered for months and, at times, seemed entirely discouraged. The working environment, particularly during the busy seasons (midterms and final exam periods, especially) was socially and mentally crippling -- the workload was simply inconsistent with the staffing structure day to day in the office. Combine these issues with perennial construction in the building (which makes it hard to concentrate on detailed editing), along with a company culture that demands silence in a room full of people, and you have a working hellscape.
