Pros

I love the culture and mission of NWYC. Helping people have an effective voice in Washington. The opportunity to make as much as you want with no one holding you back.

Cons

Nothing is "given" to you... you have to earn it (but, is that really a con ?)

Pros

People don't write congress enough. Everyone complains, and less than 2% of people actually write their elected officials to complain. So it's absolutely a great cause. Sadly, it seems this organization is losing the vision of the founder who passed away a couple decades ago. Now it seems they are in it for the profits and really don't seem to care about the country as much as he did. I see it getting worse, going more and more corporate. In fact they are planning on putting somewhat of a liberal in the CEO slot in the future - when their roots were more conservative. Sad. Every great organization seems to go through a natural progression of good to great to falling apart. This seems to be in the latter stages. You can also make decent money in your first year while you still have businesses to see. So if you're looking for quick money or temporary work, I'd say go for it.

Cons

Cold calls going into businesses essentially door to door business sales. After the first year or 2 you will likley run out of people to see and it becomes quite a struggle. The company doesn't help, but rather just pretends you're the problem, you're not selling or sticking to their script good enough. Most people can't even make it work. The management uses a lot of deceptive tactics to get you to sign on. Like telling you 1 in 5 or 1 in 10 can make it work. The real number is likely south of 1/50 or 1/100 who actually are able to make a career out of this. I spent years here and can only think of a tiny handful of people who were able to make it work consistently- and they brag on them constantly, but they are the exception for sure. Most all of them are in management. If you want to be in management and spend a ton of time away from your family that is probably the only feaseable way to make a good living with this career. I would advise you go in with an understanding you are taking a management role only and you will rarely be home. Travel away from family all the time. If you work in a rural area the company has no consideration for your travel, time away from family and sacrifices you have to make. They just expect it and turn a blind eye from your needs or struggles. They say they will reimburse you for your expenses and then the ladies at the office refuse to actually give you the reimbursements. This happened repeatedly and consistently the entire time I was there. It was very underhanded. They tell you you have a protected territory, you can work as much or as little as you want, etc.. but then they use very manipulative tactics to bully reps that don't act exactly as they want. For instance they will take your own renewals and give it to other reps if they don't think you're working them enough. There's a fine line between incentives and manipulation. They will reward and punish reps rather than providing strong incentives. For instance there is no form of longevity pay, perhaps because they don't want people there very long. Then the management gets their renewals so they seem to like that.
