Great Place to Work

Pros

I just finished my second year as a Consultant at FW Cook (I was hired straight out of college). I was given opportunities to contribute to major projects for large public companies almost immediately upon joining the firm. I work closely on client teams with not just project-managers but also Principals and Managing Directors of the firm. The structure of client staffing ensures that all Consultants are exposed to diversity of working styles and ideas. Not "stuck" with one boss or on one client team. There are obvious opportunities for advancement at the firm. Many of the Principals started right out of college/grad school and worked their way up. Compensation is very competitive.

Cons

Occasionally the workload requires that I work late during the week or on weekends, especially during the busiest months of the year. Need to stay on top of emails after office hours and over the weekend.

Major Opportunities

Pros

As the leader in a specialized field, FW Cook works with all types of companies at all stages of the corporate lifecycle - which provides great exposure to different industries and challenges. Interesting work and really smart coworkers. The company's size and culture encourages fluid information sharing and collegiality. Most people here are the types to help out even if the problem at hand doesn't affect "their" client. Lower travel burden compared to most consulting firms. Fantastic compensation closely tied to individual results. The company prefers to develop talent internally all the way to the top - the vast majority of partners/principals were hired as non-shareholder consultants.

Cons

A lack of standardization across (and sometimes within) offices in terms of processes and expectations can be frustrating for new consultants. This is not a good environment for people who aren't adept at managing through ambiguity. A low level of bureaucracy means that there a no formal controls on work/life balance - if you are successful here you will have to independently manage your workload to avoid getting overwhelmed.
