Pros

I remember interviewing for Stem and reading and wondering about some of these older reviews - It's been a year now and frankly I haven't seen any evidence of the callouts. I don't normally write reviews, but thought I'd give a more fresh and current employee perspective for whoever is reading everything. - The culture is the best I've experienced from any job position. -Our CEO is intentional, accessible and inspiring in how she seeks members of the team to know her and to know each other -Our tech and our service is gaining momentum in disrupting market standards in an industry craving this, which has been exciting and motivational to witness and participate in this past year -Collaboration, innovation, and good work is well celebrated and naturally encouraged -company culture and bonding feels natural and is prioritized even in our remote setting (sometimes we'll gather together throughout the year too) -There aren't departmental silos- I felt comfortable, even within a short time reaching out to others for project insight and just honest curiosity - HR is super attentive and in tune to the needs of employees and is intent on making our experiences with our culture fun, meaningful, and conducive to an environment where we can feel comfortable expressing our personalities, feel known in the organization, and are in the headspace to work at our best.. - I don't feel alienated because of my race or age or because I'm not in one of major hub cities my coworkers are in

Cons

Not trying to be cheesy here, but I honestly don't have any. I've worked at 3 or 4 startups of various sizes and this one gets a lot of things right. Honestly genuinely happy here. I think the reason I don't have any cons to air is because the leadership team often jumps at every opportunity to improve culture, team dynamics, and company vision/trajectory, and as employees we're encouraged to drive those conversations, more so than I've seen elsewhere. I think the usual trap growing startups fall into is expanding rapidly in numbers and breadth of focus and losing the desire or energy to maintaining quality employee experience - this hasn't happened this last year at Stem...

Pros

Some employees do their best despite the challenging environment.

Cons

Communication Barriers: Many employees experience unclear expectations, conflicting messages, or a lack of transparency regarding company direction. Leadership offers inconsistent information, leading to frustration and uncertainty. Workplace Culture & Leadership Challenges: There is a noticeable tendency toward micromanagement and a hierarchical structure that discourages open dialogue. Employees who contribute innovative ideas may find themselves sidelined or see their work credited elsewhere. Limited Industry Expertise: The company operates within the music business but appears to lack deep domain knowledge in this field. As a result, strategic decisions sometimes conflict with industry best practices, creating challenges in execution and credibility. Diversity & Inclusion Gaps: The workplace culture leans toward a homogenous perspective, which can limit creativity and inclusivity. Compensation & Career Growth Concerns: Salaries tend to be lower than industry standards, particularly given the demands of the roles. Titles may be inflated, creating a perception of career progression that does not align with actual responsibilities or compensation. Employees may find better financial opportunities elsewhere in the music industry. Workplace Retaliation: Employees who raise ethical concerns or advocate for change sometimes face negative consequences, rather than constructive dialogue. Outdated Technology & Strategic Gaps: The company has accumulated significant technical debt. In an era where AI-driven solutions are killing SaaS products, look elsewhere to innovate your career. Sales-Driven Mindset vs. Artist-Centered Approach: Discussions about leveraging music within the platform often feel transactional rather than relationship-driven. A shift toward understanding and valuing artists and their work could enhance the company’s reputation and align its strategy more effectively with industry needs.
