Pros

Biggest insurer in the US, stable company. Avoids a lot of damage from economic downturns as it invests is money wisely. Great benefits and time off policy, 401k and pension plan as well Mutual company, so it is not directly effected by markets and can plan long term 40 hour weeks are standard Can work here the rest of your life, one of the few companies where you can say that

Cons

Very insular culture Promotions based on seniority and "time-in", not necessarily talent Must be willing to move across the country to really advance at all, but most times people stay in positions for such extended periods preventing many jobs from opening up (too comfortable!) Lower management can be disorganized and chaotic. Nepotism rampant. Slow to adapt to technology and other advances. Very conservative in most every matter. Hard company for young people to work at since you are likely frozen at a certain level for quite some time

Pros

(At the time) Fair pay and predictable bonus structure They were pretty good at covering travel expenses and paying them back quickly Diverse workforce & diversity initiatives Fun and funny coworkers Opportunities for growth Again, this was all four years ago and has likely changed

Cons

(At the time and now, according to other comments) Arrogant to a fault Total lack of innovation & willingness to innovate Odd attachment to the company's past (which prevents progress) High number of veterans (20+ years) who are determined to get that retirement money, and therefore, are resistant to change and technology Heavy reliance on command and control management style Poor decision-making that leads to losses of all kinds
