      Pros

      - The People: There are some truly smart, motivated individuals here. Collaboration in small, cross-functional groups can be productive and enjoyable. - Flexibility: Fully remote.

      Cons

      - Expertise Ignored: I was hired for my expertise, but management refused to listen. They want "change" without actually being willing to change themselves or their way of working. - Strategic Missteps: Attempting to layer AI over a broken data foundation ("cleaning up the basis") is a recipe for disaster. - Management Incompetence: Leadership lacks the professional maturity or experience found at "serious" companies. My experience became toxic after a supervisor change, characterized by mistreatment and gaslighting. - Exclusionary Culture: Despite being a global company, some Slack channels are exclusively in Russian, alienating non-speakers and creating deep cultural silos. - Instability & Misclassification: Constant, thoughtless changes to org and compensation structures. The company uses freelance contracts but acts as a demanding employer (e.g., no vacations in the first months) while offering zero job security. Constantly heard that best to hire interns. - Burnout & Lack of Support: The combination of toxic supervision and being "squeezed out" eventually led to burnout. When I reached out, HR provided zero support, relying on standard corporate scripts rather than addressing the root causes of the toxic environment.

Since the timeframe referenced in this review, Smartcat has gone through changes in both structure and leadership. The Data function mentioned here was restructured in mid-2025, and some of the ways of working described no longer reflect how the organization operates today. We have also made changes to how teams operate, including updates to leadership structure and clearer decision-making approaches.       Pros

      There’s a high level of trust, you’re given real ownership and space to contribute, not just execute. The People team is very transparent and collaborative. Conversations are open, feedback is direct, and there’s a genuine focus on improving the employee experience, not just maintaining processes. I’ve also really enjoyed the AI-first mindset. There’s a lot of encouragement to think differently, experiment, and find smarter ways to work, which makes the role feel modern and impactful.

      Cons

      The remote setup offers a lot of flexibility, though I do sometimes miss the energy and connection of working together in person.
