Pros

Smartcat is an AI-first company, creating exciting opportunities to innovate in how we work. There are plenty of opportunities for professional growth in an innovative company and industry. Great level of transparency from the Leadership team, especially through regular All Hands where information is openly shared across the entire organization. Great team. There is a high-trust environment that empowers people to take ownership and make an impact on the business.

Cons

- Workload may increase during peak periods - Processes and structures are still evolving as we fully embrace being an AI-native company

Pros

At first all seemed well, remote first which for me was great, good product, good industry to work in and a good tech stack.

Cons

Any positive outlook slowly fades when you get under the hood. The product is broken, with a constant battle against bugs, a lack of internal communication between teams and unrealistic expectations from managers. Even when speaking to customers, they tell you they have no confidence, as you are the 3rd, 4th, or 5th person to be in contact as their “new account manager”. When your customers are feeling that sort of pain, you know it’s a “company problem” and not a “people problem". There are genuinely nice talented people in the company. However senior-level management, I’m afraid, are truly shocking with zero people skills, they do not inspire you to bring the best version of yourself to work each day, the complete opposite is what happens. There is a real fear that you could be laid off at any moment and for no reason. Upper management have no people skills whatsoever. I’ve seen teammates being called out in front of the team by managers which creates a real fear factor and is such a bad practice, in no world does that help anyone. There is no real feedback or career progression, only token gesture conversation every so often to “tick a box". Working in Smartcat, I can honestly say, was as stressful as it gets, targets shifting, priorities shifting almost daily, unclear roadmaps, unclear direction and a constant atmosphere of micro management from leadership. My first ever role was working in a call center where you had a "clock in/out" system, Smartcat is almost at that level, everything you do has to be tracked in a way that they use that against you.

Thank you for sharing your experience so candidly. We’re sorry to hear that your time with us felt frustrating and stressful, that’s not the experience we aim to create. We take feedback around leadership, communication, and clarity very seriously. As we continue to evolve, we’re actively working to improve alignment across teams, strengthen our management practices, and create an environment where people feel supported, heard, and able to do their best work. We appreciate you calling this out, it helps us focus on where we need to do better. If you’re open to sharing more detail, we’d welcome the opportunity to learn from your experience. Consider Smartcat only if you are problem solver

Pros

Your mileage can vary greatly if you are in Sales, Marketing, Product, Design, or Engineering, so my view won't be representative of the entire organization. Different teams have different leadership styles and different approaches to assessing performance. Smartcat is a growing company that is going through its growth pains. And while I've been at the company long enough to see it go through multiple transformations, this time is different because we are also rethinking all our processes through the prism of AI. The responsibilities and expectations of every single individual are changing. The company embraces change to an extent that some people will find disorienting. The company's org structure is flat enough for your contributions to be seen. If you are a natural problem solver, if you act as if this is your own company and you do whatever it takes to make it succeed, you will be noticed and you will have career growth opportunities. If one of your canned questions at interviews includes "How's the work-life balance?", don't bother. Smartcat is fully remote, which to me is a huge perk, but it comes with downsides. With employees around the globe, you can wake up to a hefty chunk of Slack threads that require your attention, or you may need to schedule meetings outside of "normal" hours. So with all of these pros that may sound like cons, why would you want to join Smartcat? - Probably you are all-in on AI and not only want to be allowed to use it, but to use it everywhere, invent new processes, show everybody how things can be done, and learn from other like-minded colleagues. This is true for every company function. - Or maybe you want to work with passionate people across the globe on a product that connects people and truly serves a great purpose. - Or you are a "get it done no matter what" kind of person, and want to flex that rare skill. - Or you are crazy enough to actually enjoy navigating uncertainty. I see that some people in the reviews disapprove of the CEO. Now imagine a person who is 200% all of the above and sets a high bar for others. That's our CEO. Make your own judgment. Interestingly, Smartcat is also the first company in my career where, despite all of that, I've seen multiple people return after working for some time elsewhere.

Thank you for such a thoughtful and nuanced review. It really captures both the opportunity and the reality of building and growing quickly, especially as we rethink how work gets done through AI. We appreciate you calling out the importance of clarity, consistency, and how different experiences can vary across teams. That’s an area we’re continuing to focus on as we scale, while still keeping the ownership and impact that so many people value. Grateful for your perspective and for the time you’ve invested in the journey with us. Warmly, Stacey Richey, VP of People
