Pros

Cool location, you won't ever work there, but it was fun to visit. If gimmick benefits are your thing, this is the place for you. They've got them all. Beer kegs? They've got them. Snacks? Got'em. Cabins you can Rent? Got'em. Paid Healthcare? Got it. Being, effectively, a contractor you get to just show up do your job and go home. If you're looking for a job with less emotional investment, this isn't bad.

Cons

It's contracting, so you're probably going to work for some bad companies. They didn't want to pay me as much as I thought I deserved, but I took it because I thought the benefits were pretty good. While this isn't false, they're really making up for it by paying below average and crunching every penny. You're probably better off in a place that covers less, but pays and cares more. The healthcare you're getting is only worth several grand and there's a cabin you'll maybe reserve once or twice. It's not worth *that* much, it just sounds nice. I was never convinced that there was any job stability here. When I got hired they wouldn't even give a job offer until absolutely everything was nailed down with my first client. It was less about hiring me and more about getting the client to sign. The "offer" I got laid out clearly that if the client chose not to sign the company, my employment would fall through. Despite this, I joined the company anyway, and a year later the company terminated me immediately when the client decided not to renew the contract.

Thank you for the feedback. While you make some very good points, there is quite a bit of misinformation in your review. We are very open and honest during our hiring and on-boarding process about what OPI is and how we operate. We lay it all out in front of you through multiple interviews with all levels of the organization. There is no smoke in mirrors here. It's in our best interest to hire talented individuals that truly understand our company, culture, and approach to client engagement. In fact, it's imperative to our 20+ year history of success. We do not, and have not, terminated an employee when a client does not renew a contract - unless it's with cause. Everyone is a full-time salaried employee, with full benefits, whether they're working on a client project or not. We carry a full bench and always have. 100% free healthcare is a unique benefit we've always offered, and our free vacation properties are used extensively. We're not perfect, but we sure make an effort when an employee expresses discontent about their client or experience working at OPI. I'm sure there are things we can learn from this feedback, but it is far from the norm and not accurately portrayed. --Ehren Seim, COO

Pros

OPI's greatest asset is its people. Many of the engineers were the best I've ever worked with. They are a great technical force in the Twin Cities and host lots of meetups, etc. OPI has gone through a challenging acquisition but, even though I left (more on that below), I think it would be a great place to work and I highly recommend it, as long as the core OPI leadership is intact.

Cons

OPI is awesome but your daily life will be almost entirely dictated by your client. This is normal for consulting, though. Their benefits were restructured post-acquisition. While Improving's benefits were still very good, suddenly with more standard benefits, PAY became more of an issue. OPI paid, imo, within the average for the Twin Cities, but maybe on the lower end of average. However... OPI engineers are very good. :) With the benefits suddenly not all that special, I left for a 55% pay increase (not an exaggeration). Even though I loved and still miss OPI, it was too much to ignore.

Pros

I left independent consulting and joined Object Partners looking for stability, community, chance to work with top talent, medical benefits, and a desire to help be a part of a growing company, not just a placed body. I have been very impressed. The company is very open, holding quarterly meetings and posting to employees the state of the company and the 'consultant pipeline' if you want to see it. From everything I have seen, the very thin management layer understands that the consultants on site helping provide value to our customers are the company. This is not a sales and marketing company that hires to fill bodies to skim salaries to pay for the sales and marketing people. I've worked there. That is not this company. The people in the company that I have worked with, or met at social events, quarterly meetings, or on the company trip have been great. Have an issue with your workplace? There is someone to talk to. Have a tech question? Someone will help. Need to bang some ideas off a few people. No problem. Want to find someone to get a beer with? Covered.

Cons

I think that the people that have issues here are those that are more introverted, or those waiting for someone to notice their issue. The thin management layer means that it is difficult to know exactly how people are doing if they work at client sites. However, speak up, and they are extremely responsive. If the CL (consultant lead) program is new (seems to work pretty well to minimize issue above), that might explain mine and earlier folks different experiences.
