Pros

Job Security & Benefits- As with all NHS roles, you get access to, pension, sick pay, paid holidays and union support. Experience with Diverse Clinical Presentations- You’ll deal with a high volume of calls across Scotland, giving broad exposure to different demographics and mental health presentations in a fast-paced environment. It gives psychology students hands-on experience with real clinical populations, risk assessment, and evidence-based interventions. It’s a strong foundation for moving onto other careers in psychology.

Cons

Emotional Toll & Burnout Risk- Frequent exposure to distress and crisis calls can be draining, especially in an environment where follow-up is minimal and emotional processing is limited by time. Shift Work- While this offers flexibility for some, others might struggle with working evenings, nights, or weekends. It can disrupt work-life balance and sleep if not managed well. Requires annual leave to be booked at least 8 weeks in advance, which limits flexibility.
