Pros
I loved working at Merriam Music. This is a perfect position for the newly graduated music student. I finished my Masters in Voice Performance and was looking for a position that would help me stay in my field and begin to dig my toes into the working world of music. Merriam music is a place that allowed me to continue to grow, while I was able to foster a love of music in my students. They also were very supportive of my auditions and musical pursuits, and always allowed for me to find substitute teachers in times when I had a performance or other musical commitment. It is also important for me to say that my co-workers and my management team were top notch. I feel that I have made some lifelong friendships, and never felt any concerns speaking with my management team about any issues that arose. This is a wonderful company and I highly recommend it as a choice workplace for young musicians who are interested in teaching!
Cons
There were only a few cons to this job in my opinion. I worked in the Vaughan location, which has less amenities than the Oakville location (ie Recording Studio, Cutting-edge Performance Space, Enriched Programs are run out of the Oakville Location only). As a result of this, the Vaughan teachers didn't always feel that they were getting the best elements available for their students. The benefit plan is also not so great for part-time teachers. Looking forward, as I will likely be having children in the next few years, I was wanting a better benefit plan. Those are really the largest cons to this job in my opinion. I was very happy with all the other elements of my job!
