Pros

As a manager I was compensated well.

Cons

As a sales manager you have very little control over sales. There are too many cooks in the kitchen. The management structure is flat and anyone you take to has to check with someone else to do what you want to do and the person that needs to be check with is not there. While i was there they were trying to change the culture from an order taker culture to a sales culture. The problem is they didn't know how to get there or how to measure the employees conversion. They used the same metric they did before the conversion. You can not have regional, district and store managers that have no idea how to sell steering the ship to a sales culture change. I was in a meeting the second day i was with the company and the store manager said "Sales makes good customer service." I figured I didn't quit hear her correctly so I asked her to repeat it. She did exactly the same way. In my 20 years of retail, sales management and sales experience I had never heard it put that way. I asked do you mean, 'Customer service makes good sales?" She said, no" and repeated her statement. Since I was hired for my sales acumen I decided to yet here know she had it backwards. To the company's credit they asked this individual to resign shortly after. Unfortunately her replacement lacked the skills to manage other managers. To be honest there are too many other horror stories to mention, from myself and the other managers I had talked too.

Pros

you get ok pto even as a part timer, not physically demanding, good A/C and heating depending on the weather.

Cons

very low pay compared to other businesses, you only get a 40 cent raise every year. same playlist consisting of 15 songs on repeat and it drives you crazy as time goes on. very inconsistent hours they rarely give morning shifts, you only get the more undesirable shifts like closing which ends at 9:30pm. the sales goals will be exceeded and they hours will still be cut especially around the holiday season. numerous amounts of time where i am left alone at the register on a busy day with no backup and still expected to clean fitting rooms and recover the floor with no help. overall no room for growth, started when i was 18 and am now 20 and have not even been considered or offered a higher position, 2 tiny raises is all i got. i overall feel like my position is bottom of the barrel compared to asset protection, jewelry department, and fragrance sales because they get paid better and make commission while doing less easier work. would not recommend and if you do end up working at a Macys use the experience you have and never stop applying to jobs because there really is no growth here.
