Pros

Large company, ability to promote and move up if you are willing to work. 5% 401k match after 1 year. If you can work the guideline schedule of 48 hours then the salary is alright but being able to do that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. Advice to someone looking to become an SMC or promote to store manager: no matter what is going on at work, keep your weeks to 50 hours or less. sometimes you have to say "enough for one day" and go home. it will be there in the morning.

Cons

This company definitely has the screws tightened down on payroll, this often leads to "solo coverage" or working in the store alone. All retail is the "too many tasks, not enough hands to do them" but DG takes things to another level. The pay scale for hourly people is way below industry average with most cashiers making minimum wage and ASM's making around $10 hourly creating a situation where it is difficult to recruit decent talent. Because of this you are constantly hiring new people to replace the ones who quit. This trend continues into the store managers and in some cases district managers. After working big box retail for nearly a decade i cant believe some of the store managers are still employed here. Small staff makes covering shifts nearly impossible, leading to the store mgr having to cover(usually on your 1 day off).

Pros

Cons

There is no work life balance. If you’re a store manager you’re expected to be there 24/7 if necessary. You’re also salary, so you’re paid for a flat 40 hours but required to schedule yourself for a minimum of 48 hours. No holiday pay, no overtime. You have access to two types of bonuses but they’re IF you qualify for them. You get little to no support from upper management and constantly told you’re not doing enough. They don’t care if you’re having staffing issues and still expect you to get the truck completely worked in 2 days and the store to be 100% recovered daily, even if you’re alone. Then they’ll either look for ways to write you up to terminate you or push you until you quit.
