Pros
It's a great company to be at. Overall, there's an amazing culture going on, especially in the DC/Richmond/Chicago offices. Ample snack, good selection of drinks, video games in the office, and most of what you can ask for at a tech company. Company is very well funded – if you work under their customer facing lines of businesses. Great pay to stay and collect a paycheck.
Cons
Too much bureaucracy for anything to get done. The culture is dying. The quality of new hires coming in are very low. Capital One can't attract good talent and beginning to "settle" on the remaining applicants. You're not going to attract talent if you under pay your new hires. People are leaving / talking about leaving. Value your design and engineering talent. They're the ones who will bring Capital One to become the tech company it so desires to be. Work culture is very dependent on your team / manager. The NYC 114 culture is dead. Long hours plague many teams. It feels like a marketing agency. If I come back into the office at 8pm because I forgot my keys, and there is an entire team of designers/engineers still in the office on a Friday night, there is a problem. If someone is in the office on a holiday, and I'm there to notice that person, there is a problem. Too much legacy code. Too many old guys trying to hold onto their jobs. It's a dead end for those just starting their careers.
