Pros

Frequent team outings and social events that help build relationships across the team. Generally a friendly, social environment!

Cons

The property management team is highly competitive when it comes to promotions, and I’ve seen BDRs remain in the same seat for years or eventually leave, as internal advancement opportunities can be limited. However, for top performers, there is promising upside, and you get to work with some of the best leaders in the organization. On the investment management team, leadership quality is more uneven, and there appears to be a lack of management experience, which has created gaps in coaching, accountability, and overall team development. As a result, performance outcomes have lagged, with the majority of BDRs and AEs struggling to consistently hit target. Team turnover has also been notably high, and leadership engagement only increased after a large portion of the team had already decided to leave, which by that point felt too late to rebuild morale or trust.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. It’s great to hear that you enjoyed our culture and team outings. We take your comments seriously – especially regarding the need for proactive management support, better coaching, and clearer advancement opportunities for our BDR and AE teams – and we are actively working to address these areas to ensure our reps feel supported and set up for long-term success. Thank you again for helping us improve, and we wish you the very best.

Pros

The people at AppFolio are incredible—smart, thoughtful, collaborative, and genuinely committed to doing great work. That level of talent creates a very positive and supportive working environment. Many of the relationships and teams there are truly special, and the people are the reason the culture has historically been so strong. I genuinely wanted to build a long-term career there because of the quality of the people.

Cons

As the company has scaled, many processes and guidelines have scaled with it. In some cases this has introduced a level of rigidity where policy and process outweigh reason and common sense. Decision-making authority that used to sit with managers increasingly feels centralized through templated HR processes. Career growth and role progression have also become more structured, which can limit the ability for employees to grow organically as their responsibilities expand.

Thank you for such a thoughtful reflection on your time at AppFolio. The way you described the people here as smart, collaborative, and genuinely committed is exactly what we believe defines our culture, and it means a lot to hear those relationships made you want to build a long-term career here. You've named a challenge we take seriously. As we've grown, we've built more defined processes to ensure consistency and clarity, but we recognize that structure can come at the cost of the flexibility and human judgment that made AppFolio feel special. It's feedback we're mindful of and will continue to keep front of mind. Your point about AI resonates. Our intention is that these tools support our people rather than constrain them, and it's something we're paying close attention to. Your feedback on manager empowerment will be shared with our leadership team. Our people are our greatest strength, and the systems we build should reflect that. We wish you all the best, and we're grateful for the impact you made here.
