Pros

Having worked for micro-managed hierarchal companies for many years, it is so refreshing to work for a company that allows flexibility, personal development and listens to the added value you can bring to the business. Strong research has proven that a flat-hierarchy empowers employees to take responsibility for their own work and this has been the experience I have working here. The 'sky's the limit' in what I can bring to the organisation by way of improvements, personal development and I am trusted 100% to do what I need to and given the space to do extra too. There is a relaxed atmosphere here and people can be open and honest about how they feel with directors/founders doors always open and responsive to feedback. I have not only been supported in my personal development and encouraged to enrol onto courses that are of interest to me, but supported with my personal health and family circumstances too allowing me to take care of myself and family encouraging a work-life balance I have never really experienced before. Equality and diversity is important to 4OC with numerous events taking place throughout the year celebrating difference and various networks/working groups endeavouring to change our understanding. e.g. recently we held a Lunch and Learn session on Neurodiversity in the workplace, which was inspiring and has encouraged changes to how we do things. Thank you.

Cons

Pros

The flat structure at 4OC means that senior leadership is approachable and open to communication, which is a real plus. I also found there were excellent opportunities for professional growth. I gained exposure to multiple sectors, which significantly benefited my development, and the company has a strong mentorship programme that supports career progression—especially if you align well with the company’s culture. Additionally, the team environment is very informal and socially active, which can be great if you enjoy a laid-back work atmosphere.

Cons

However, the lack of a dedicated HR department was a significant issue. It led to unspoken cultural and interpersonal problems that weren’t properly addressed, and there was a lack of clear support when conflicts arose, particularly with senior colleagues. The social culture, while vibrant, isn’t always inclusive, which made it difficult for some to feel fully integrated into the team. Towards the end of my time, the company seemed to be in a state of uncertainty, which affected the overall mood and morale. I also found myself left to fend for myself after not being assigned to projects for a couple of months, which was frustrating and isolating.
