Staff are held accountable for goals that are never clearly communicated

Pros

Working from home provided a degree of autonomy and made day-to-day operations more manageable. Unionized roles benefit from an active and committed union that works hard to hold senior leadership accountable and advocate for staff. This has led, in the past, to improved pay and benefits. Outside of senior leadership and their immediate circle, staff are highly intelligent, thoughtful and deeply committed to the organization’s mission and the quality of their work.

Cons

The organization was once highly respected, but its reputation within the nonprofit sector has deteriorated significantly. This has made it increasingly difficult to attract qualified senior leadership candidates, especially in the executive director role, since 2019. Senior management provides little clear direction and leadership, and the organization’s mission and priorities are obscured, not communicated. Staff are left without a shared understanding of their roles or goals, but still held accountable for outcomes that have not been clearly defined. Unsustainable management practices, including poor communication and lack of direction have contributed to widespread staff burnout across teams. Two rounds of significant layoffs in just over a year have disproportionately impacted union staff. While the union has worked to hold leadership accountable, senior management has not consistently demonstrated commitment to the terms of the union agreement. Lack of transparency around financial health and related leadership messaging does not appear to align with operational realities, particularly given the scale and impact of recent layoffs. Layoffs have significantly weakened key operational functions, including development and business development, raising concerns about long-term sustainability and revenue strategy.

Pros

Remote work, PTO, in this environment- having a job

Cons

This organization has gone from being a great place to work to a deeply frustrating and disorganized one. Nearly all leadership has changed and come across as unapproachable or dismissive. The one leader that remained is out of touch and part of the problem (they were the previous interim co-ED), but was somehow promoted which is a joke and insult to remaining staff. There is little consistency in messaging. Staff are told the organization is struggling and failing, then immediately told everything is fine and we are doing great. Also, the organization’s mission and vision have shifted, but these changes have not been communicated to staff. As a result, many employees feel disconnected from the direction of the organization and do not trust leadership. Also, financial concerns are ongoing, with little confidence in the organization’s ability to sustain itself. Staff layoffs were recent and the folks doing the day-to-day work are overworked because there is not enough staff. Yet, there seems to be a new position posted for a leadership role every few weeks, but none to advance the day-to-day work. Overall, the current environment lacks clarity, consistency, and confidence in leadership. Unless you want to be overworked, stressed, and annoyed, I do not recommend working here.
