Worst Job I've Ever Had

Pros

I made great connections with fellow employees all of whom have since left.

Cons

Salaries for non-directors are low compared to other think tanks in the area. There was no work-life balance and employees often had to work until 9 or 10 pm, on the weekends, and when they were supposed to be on vacation. Leadership did not take any criticism or accountability for mistakes and could take weeks to respond to emails. Small mistakes were blown out of proportion, leadership had no respect for employees' time, they used any information you gave them about your personal life against you, and leadership talked about employees behind their back. Expectations and procedures were constantly changed with no notice and were often not advertised to the whole organization until someone used an outdated file and got yelled at. Multiple complaints were made to HR which resulted in the first HR consultant being let go and when replacements were brought in and another HR complaint was made the 2 HR consultants both left the company. The board either doesn't know or doesn't care. They currently have no head of finance, no Russia program, and no development team.

Pros

There are absolutely no positives to this experience.

Cons

You will be underpaid, undervalued, and told that you are never enough - despite putting in 60+ hours per week. It seems that leadership's goal is to minimize and berate employees at every opportunity. Alina and Geysha find joy in picking on and humiliating staffers in front of other employees and external organizations. It was a low-paid, thankless job, run by leaders who do not care about you, and prioritize their fame in the DC area and beyond. CEPA has a bad reputation and everyone on the Hill knows it. Stay away at all costs - they prey on people who have no other options available. Hold out for another organization.

Worst Workplace I've Encountered in Years

Pros

Fellows associated with the programs are insightful and generous with their time

Cons

Inexperienced leadership does not know how to manage or treat people well. Leaders' behavior resulted in a toxic workplace for most employees. The level and quality of analysis just is not on par with what it once was. I would not recommend the organization to a job seeker interested in the European policy space.
