Poor leadership

Business outlook

Pros

Good benefits. Nice office space.

Cons

Isolating/individualistic laissez faire work culture: Staff work independently and quietly at their desks with very little social interaction every day. Everyone is expected to be doing their own work and managing themselves with no reliable feedback and minimal meetings with senior leadership/higher-ups/team members. Staff meetings are unplanned, often impromptu, and poorly facilitated. Elitist organization, mostly ivy-league white men. High turnover rate, most people leave within a year. Senior leadership says they are open to feedback but make themselves scantly available. When offered feedback, often respond defensively and with harsh criticism and no feeling. Low pay, under market rate.

POC + Women beware

Pros

Flexible work environment. Good benefits.

Cons

The best way to describe the culture is elitist with sexist and racist undertones. I often felt like I was actively working to ensure POC and women were second class citizens. There is a high turnover rate, which is hidden by the fact that a few staffers have been there for 7+ years, but most people leave within a year or so. There is not a lot of accountability for senior leadership, which leads to an environment where staff often feel disrespected or devalued. Senior management will often say they value input/openness, but if you have a difference of opinion their responses are often cruel or demoralizing. Low pay.

Pros

Excellent network of researchers the organisation engages with. Interesting and important research topics. Flexible working hours. Decent benefits for the sector, if low for the Bay Area.

Cons

An occasionally restrictive research environment with direction dictated by senior staff with minimal input from analysts. Slow and tedious turn around on projects. Poor management and communication leads to confusion and isolated working environment. Salary is low for the Bay Area. Flexible working hours are nice, but it means other staff are often not in the office and this hinders the ability to progress projects. Opportunity for career progression is limited owing to the small and niche nature of the organisation. High staff turnover. Most staff seem to leave within 2 - 3 years which says a lot about morale and opportunities for career progression.
