Good culture, no growth

Pros

work culture of no egos, people are there because they are very committed to the craft of journalism, super smart and very supportive colleagues, doesn't feel like you are competing with your peers

Cons

little to no growth opportunities for non-text reporters, very hard to get raises, no performance reviews, stagnant salaries which are below market for big cities, feels like people are sacrificing their livelihoods in exchange for love of the craft and to be part of the brand because the company generally doesn't reward them financially for their efforts

Pros

Unbeatable experience covering news consumed around the globe Great benefits Phenomenal colleagues Relatively strong fiscal/economic footing for a news org

Cons

Transfer requests can take a long time. Can be hard to transition into topic-based beats. Pay isn't competitive enough.

Pros

Good work life balance - no one bothers you in the weekends or after 5pm. Amicable colleagues. Bosses treat you well and understands if you need time off for emergency cases or personal stuff.

Cons

No challenges to push your career forward. No upward training programs / skill improvement courses to help you climb up the career ladder.

Great people but bad management

Business outlook

Pros

There are great, dedicated and kind people working for AP. Most of my colleagues were incredibly hard working and there was real team spirit in the department.

Cons

Unfortunately overall management is not great and largely white and male (despite the current CEO). HR may well as be non-existent and there were definite issues with diversity and inclusion that were not being addressed. Also, people have not been replaced after leaving and the people left are having to take on more and more work.
